Istana Nurul Iman, which is known as the world’s biggest palace, is the Sultan of Brunei’s official residence. The Sultan of Brunei uses the palace for ceremonies and official events as well. The palace spans 2.15 million square feet and is larger than any other palace in history. 

There are over 1700 rooms in the palace including luxurious suites for guests, halls for hosting banquets, offices for conducting business and small areas for prayer.

A combination of modern architectural styles and Islamic and Malay cultural elements has been used to design the building, featuring numerous golden domed roofs, decorative marble floors and detailed artwork throughout the structure. 

The palace was constructed in the 1980’s and represents each of these three components of life: wealth, pride, and royalty. Only during major religious events is the public permitted to visit the palace.

1. Guinness World Record Holder

The Istana Nurul Iman is officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the largest residential palace in the world.

The size of this structure is larger than many famous buildings. The palace has huge hallways, garages to hold hundreds of automobiles and a large number of family and staff living quarters making it not only a residence but also an entire royal complex with vast amounts of usable space.

2. Designed by a Notable Architect

Architectural principles now define this magnificent structure. Architects have created this unique masterpiece that reflects both Classical and Islamic architecture with an element of modernism incorporated into its design.

Also included in the design was the philosophy of creating a building, which represented contemporary luxury, that uses both modern and traditional design elements while still being true to its cultural roots.

3. Over 1,700 Rooms Inside

The royal palace contains over 1,700 individual rooms including royal suites, guest bedrooms, banquet halls, office space, and areas of prayer. The room layouts are fully functional based on how they will be used, and the skirting and furniture throughout are adorned with high-end materials like marble, gold trim, and premium woods depict extreme luxury throughout the palace.

4. Used for Grand Celebrations 

Depending on major holidays such as Aidilfitri (Eid al-Fitr) in Brunei Darussalam, the Sultanion welcomes many thousands of people during these gatherings. The Sultan himself greets visitors according to the customs of hospitality. 

Thus, the public celebrations at the royal residence change its nature from private house to a national cultural venue for developing further integration among people of Brunei as well as their culture and sharing their generosity.

5. Luxury Features and Facilities 

The palace features impressive facilities such as a number of swimming pools, a very large mosque, and banquet facilities for up to 1,500 guests or more. There are also large amounts of parking spaces and well-decorated interiors throughout the complex.

These luxuries serve to show both the tradition of a residence for the Sultan and a place where official state functions occur.
