First Smartphone: Fun Facts About Simon

The first smartphone was invented by the United States, it is believed that the first smart phone was conceptualized in 1992 by IBM and known as the IBM Simon Personal Communicator. It came out in late 1994 with both mobile phone and PDA attributes and was revolutionary for its time.

The IBM Simon allowed its users to call other phone numbers, send e-mail messages, and manage contact files. All of these features were provided through an advanced touch screen monitor for the early part of a decade.

Due to the size, weight, and limitations of the IBM Simon when compared to today’s smart phones, many of the functions that are considered standard today were utilized as the basis for future mobile devices. Due to the fact that the first smart phone was created and introduced to public consumers in North America, it has gained the title “the first smart phone”.

Interesting Facts About World’s First Smartphone

1. First True Smartphone

IBM’s Simon, the first smartphone ever released in the U.S. market in 1994, was an inherently wireless device combining mobile cellular technology with portable computing functions such as email, calendar and notes. Although it was a cumbersome device, the Simon was the foundation for modern day mobile device technology.

2. Early Touchscreen Innovation

IBM’s Simon was the first mobile phone to include a touchscreen; it utilized resistive touchscreen technology so users could write directly onto the screen using a stylus. Most other phones had buttons prior to the Simon and were not considered to be “touchscreen” devices at that time.

The concept of using touchscreens to navigate mobile devices was new and eventually became the most commonly found way of navigating all modern-day mobile phones and tablets worldwide.

3. Limited Battery Life

An interesting fact about smartphones like IBM Simon is their short battery life; these early smartphones typically only had about 1 hour of talk time, indicating the performance of these early mobile devices had much room for growth. Fast charge technology has caused smartphones to have significantly longer battery life today.

4. Ahead of Its Time

The IBM Simon was so innovative when it launched that there was no market interest because of the pricing and the device being bulky and having poor battery life. These drawbacks prevented the Simon from achieving significant commercial success; however, it dominated future development of mobile devices.

5. Foundation of Modern Phones

Howard Simon established the foundation for all currently utilized smartphones, including mobile application technology, touchscreen methods for input or retrieval of information, and integration of several forms of communication.

Modern smartphone brands such as Apple or Samsung continue to develop on the basis set by earlier brands & devices, growing smart phones into global, mobile computers for communicating with others, working, having fun, and attending school.
