What is Operation Urja Suraksha?

Last Updated: Mar 26, 2026, 20:18 IST

Launched in March 2026, Operation Urja Suraksha (Energy Security) represents a proactive shift in India’s maritime doctrine. Led by the Indian Navy, this non-combat mission deploys frontline destroyers and frigates to provide physical escorts and electronic-warfare protection for India-bound tankers traversing the volatile Strait of Hormuz. By securing high-priority vessels like the Pine Gas and Jag Vasant series, the operation mitigates the risks of hijacking and sabotage fueled by West Asian tensions.

A special naval-security operation introduced in 2026 in March and named Operation Urja Suraksha is the Indian Navy-led operation to protect India-bound energy-carrying vessels as they pass through the Strait of Hormuz and the adjacent waters in the Gulf of Oman.

The name of the project, Urja Suraksha, means Energy Security, and the mission is based on this, as it aims to maintain continuous supply of oil, LNG and LPG to India via high-risk waterborne routes.

As a part of this, the Indian Navy makes use of frontline warships to physically escort, route-guide, and close-quarter protect India-flagged and India-bound tankers so that they can cross conflict-related areas without being hijacked, sabotaged, or forcibly diverted.

The operation is clearly non-combat as it aims at risk-reduction and deterrence instead of the actual military interference with hostile actors.

Why was Operation Urja Launched?

Operation Urja Suraksha was launched due to the escalating tensions in West Asia especially among Iran and the Israel backed western nations which have been continually attacking commercial shipping in the Gulf-Oman area.

A series of merchant vessel attacks, mines, and drone attacks in the first half of 2026 off the Strait of Hormuz resulted in a spike in insurance rates, rerouting expenses and volatility in world energy prices.

India, as a country with a high degree of crude oil and gas dependence on imports, was at a risk of direct problems with supplies, explosions in fuel prices, and indirect effects on the industrial sector.

To protect its own commercial interests and not to be involved in open-ended confrontation, the Government of India ordered the Indian Navy to prepare a specific and purposeful operation- Operation Urja Suraksha to defend energy-shipping lanes in India.

Area of Operation

The major battlefield of the Operation Urja Suraksha is the Strait of Hormuz, the maritime transit between Iran and Oman, through which almost a fifth of all seaborne oil in the world flows.

It also spans into the Gulf of Oman and the northern Arabian sea where the Indian Navy vessels escort vessels out of areas of direct conflict and into less hazardous areas in the direction of Indian ports.

Over five frontline warships including destroyers and multi-role frigates armed with sophisticated radar, missile and helicopter platforms have been put in place by the Indian Navy.

The vessels work in rotating work teams to ensure that there is always a presence of at least one of the navy units to accompany flagged and India-bound energy carriers through the most critical sections of the route.

When a ship is spotted, it receives a naval escort which can meet it at an agreed point, most commonly or right after the Strait of Hormuz.

The warship is safe and separated, safe and anti-drone and is equipped with electronic-warfare protection, route-specific advisories to stay out of known threat zones or contested areas.

The whole process is conducted using utmost caution and low profile, in order to avoid instigating an escalation as well as to avoid drawing the attention of the enemy.

Involved Cargo and Target Vessels

The Navy has shortlisted approximately 22 India bound merchant ships to be incorporated in Operation Urja Suraksha among them approximately 20 high-priority energy carriers.

These are LPG carriers like Pine Gas, Jag Vasant-series vessels and various crude-oil tankers which carry fuel that is to be delivered to Indian refineries and city-gas-distribution systems.

Moreover, various tankers carrying crude-oil on long distances in and out of the Gulf are being tracked and will be escorted in phases, which means that no great energy consignment to India is left to be exposed at the present stage of the West-Asian unrest.

Latest Achievements and Successes

Operation Urja Suraksha has already shown tangible results to the energy-security apparatus of India since the time when this program was launched in March 2026.

Numerous LPG carriers and crude-oil tankers passing the Strait of Hormuz under the protection of the naval forces prevented the possible delays, contractual fines, and losses as connected with insurance among Indian purchasers and traders.

The defence authorities have observed that the coordination model that was established through this operation, which connects the naval forces, port management, and shipping-industry services, has enhanced end-to-end situational awareness and lessened response lags in case of a crisis.

There is initial evidence to indicate that the Urja Suraksha escort-pattern model can be codified into the standing procedures of subsequent maritime-security operations, particularly during periods of regional unrest or during periods of increased piracy.
