New York's Grand Central Terminal is the largest railway station in the USA and the world in terms of the number of platforms. It has 44 platforms, 67 tracks which is spread two levels below ground. It has been operating since 1913 and spans 48 acres in Midtown Manhattan, and continues to be a leading commuter rail station in North America. It is also known as Grand Central Station, but is technically Grand Central Terminal because it is a "terminal" station where trains begin and end their journey.

Why Grand Central Terminal is the Largest Railway Station in the USA?

The reason Grand Central Terminal is considered the largest railways station in USA is because of its size. Most large stations have 10-20 platforms. Grand Central Terminal has 44 platforms. The platforms are serviced by 67 tracks on two levels. All of these tracks are below ground, which was a significant engineering achievement at that time. The Grand Central Terminal holds the Guinness World Record for railway station with the most platforms.

The total area of the station is 48 acres. This makes it a huge structure, complete with shops, restaurants and secret tunnels. It is the main station for the Metro-North Railroad, which runs from New York City to its northern suburbs and Connecticut.

Grand Central Terminal: Architecture and Famous Features

The station is known for its Beaux-Arts style. It combines classical forms with new materials such as steel and glass. The Main Concourse is the station's most distinctive feature. It has a high-ceiling with a mural of the zodiac constellations on it. In fact, it was painted upside down, a interesting piece of fact often shared with people visiting the station for the first time.

The other prominent feature is the multi-faced opal clock. It is located on top of the Information Booth in the concourse. It is valued between 10 million and 20 million dollars. There is also a "Whispering Gallery" outside the Oyster Bar. If two people stand at opposite corners of the arched entryway, they can hear each other's whispers perfectly across the hall.

Grand Central vs. Pennsylvania Station

Despite being the largest in size and number of tracks, Grand Central Terminal is not the busiest. Pennsylvania Station (Penn Station) in New York City is busier. Penn Station is home to Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit. Penn Station is also the busiest train station in North America.

It's a matter of scale. Grand Central has more platforms. Penn Station has more trains and people. They're both critical to the economy of the Northeast United States. The recent Grand Central Madison expansion added more capacity to Grand Central Terminal, including serving the Long Island Rail Road for the first time.

Is Grand Central Terminal a train station or a terminal?

It is officially a terminal because it is the final stop for the train lines that enter it. Trains do not pass through it to continue to another destination. Instead, they arrive, discharge passengers, and depart in the opposite direction.
