Where Does the Hudson River Start?
The Hudson River originates from the Adirondack Mountains. Its main source is Lake Tear of the Clouds, a small tarn located on the southwest slope of Mount Marcy, the highest point in New York State.
In New York State the river is nothing more than a shallow, cold stream known as Feldspar Brook, which eventually flows into the Opalescent River before officially becoming the Hudson.

The Upper Hudson: From the Adirondacks down to Troy, NY, the river is a freshwater stream with significant drops in elevation, making it ideal for the historical timber and milling industries.
The Lower Hudson (The Estuary): South of the Federal Dam in Troy, the river becomes tidal. This section is known by the Mohican name Muhheakantuck, meaning "the river that flows both ways." The salt line where ocean water meets freshwater shifts depending on the tides and seasonal rainfall.
The Palisades: Near its end, the river is flanked by the majestic Palisades steep cliffs of the diabase that provide a dramatic backdrop to the New Jersey shoreline.

The Hudson River ends its journey at Upper New York Bay. As it passes between Manhattan and the New Jersey shoreline, it is often referred to as the North River. It eventually empties into the Atlantic Ocean via the Narrows.

The river is named after Henry Hudson, an English sea explorer sailing for the Dutch East India Company. In 1609, Hudson anchored his ship, the Half Moon, in the river while searching for the elusive Northwest Passage to Asia.
