Venezuela is the first country to lose all its glaciers. The melting of these ice giants is a grim warning of the climate crisis caused by humans, endangering global water resources and the environment.

As per the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative, Venezuela’s final glacier, named Humboldt, was reduced to less than 0.1 sq. km in 2024.

Which is the First Country to Lose All Its Glaciers?

Venezuela became the first country to lose all its glaciers in the history of the planet, where the disappearance of all glaciers took place because of incessant global warming.

According to researchers from the International Cryosphere Climate Initiative, in 2024, the last glacier of Venezuela called Humboldt Glacier on top of the Pico Bolivar mountain lost its status as a glacier.

The Humboldt Glacier transformed into a melting ice field which cannot be considered a glacier anymore.

This important event highlights the speed of disappearance of tropical glaciers compared to others.

How is a Glacier Defined?

Glacier is termed by scientists as a large body of dense ice formed through accumulation of snow which moves due to its own weight.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an area of 100,000 square meters or 10 hectares/25 acres serves as the basic threshold for glaciers, although no specific criteria have been defined universally.

Bodies below this size are generally referred to as snowfields or ice patches. Motion and durability separate glaciers from ice, facilitating loss measurements in the face of rising temperatures.

Why Did Venezuela Lose All Its Glaciers?

The glaciers of Venezuela, which numbered six in the nineteenth century, have been vanishing fast because of climate change caused by humans and warming temperatures.

The last glacier in Venezuela, known as the Humboldt Glacier, which was around 0.12 square km in 2019, has shrunk in size by more than 50% by 2023 because of increased temperatures and melting snow.

The destruction of trees and black carbon emissions further increased melting rates, making the melting of tropical ice impossible.

  • Six glaciers existed in Venezuela around 1910.

  • Five vanished by the 1970s.

  • Humboldt held on until 2024 reclassification.

The tropical mountains such as the Pico Bolivar have the advantage of heating up faster due to their location at higher elevations, and thus speeding up the process.

Venezuela stands out as the first country to lose all its glaciers, and this underlines the extent to which climate change has taken hold of delicate ice globally. Safeguarding existing glaciers requires drastic reductions in global emissions of greenhouse gases.
