Who Was Mahatma Gandhi?
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, a small town in Gujarat. He studied law in London and later worked in South Africa, where he faced unfair treatment because of his race. Because of this incident, he was completely changed. He came back to India in 1915 and slowly became the most important leader of India's freedom movement.
Gandhi Ji believed in truth and non-violence. He called this idea Satyagraha. He led major movements such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Dandi Salt March, and the Quit India Movement. Why Is Gandhi Called the Father of the Nation?

The Government of India has never passed any order, resolution, or law that formally gives Gandhi the title of Father of the Nation. This was confirmed more than once through the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
In one case, a Class 6 student from Lucknow filed an RTI application with the Prime Minister's Office. She asked for a copy of the official order that declared Gandhi as the Father of the Nation. Her query was passed on to the Ministry of Home Affairs and then to the National Archives of India. Both replied that no such specific order could be found in government records.
In another RTI reply, the Ministry of Home Affairs clearly stated that although Gandhi is popularly known by this title, it was never formally given to him by the government.
Can any Title be Used under the Constitutional Article?
According to Article 18(1), the State cannot give any title to a citizen, except titles related to military service or academic achievement. This rule was added so that India would not follow the old system of royal titles like "Sir" or "Rai Bahadur" that existed during British rule.
Because of this article, even if the government had wanted to make "Father of the Nation" an official title, it would not have been allowed under the Constitution. This is why the title remains a mark of public respect rather than a legal honour.
