The Indian government has commissioned Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)BEML. Bengaluru to build the B28 high-speed trainsets. Designed for 280 kmph, this project marks India's shift toward self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in high-speed rail, separate from the Japanese Shinkansen procurement..
The B28 trainset is a product of Indian engineering. In October 2024, the Indian Government awarded a landmark contract to BEML Limited at its rail coach complex in Bengaluru. This project is the centerpiece of the "Vande Bharat" evolution into true high-speed rail.
Key Specifications of the B28:
-
Manufacturer: BEML (Bengaluru), in collaboration with ICF Chennai.
-
Design Speed: 280 kmph (Test speed).
-
Operational Speed: 250 kmph.
-
Configuration: 8-car trainsets with fully air-conditioned Chair Car seating.
-
Capacity: Each trainset is designed to offer world-class comfort with rotatable and reclining seats.
Timeline and Testing:
The government has set a rigorous timeline for this "Bengaluru-born" bullet train:
-
Manufacturing Completion: The first two prototype trainsets are expected to be ready by the first quarter of 2027 (March 2027).
-
Trial Runs: Following completion, the B28 will undergo extensive oscillation trials and safety tests.
-
First Deployment: It is scheduled to lead the inaugural run on the Surat-Vapi section in August 2027.

Why the B28 is Different from the Japanese Train
| Feature | Japanese Shinkansen (E5) | Indian B28 (BEML) |
| Origin | Imported from Japan | Made in Bengaluru, India |
| Top Speed | 320 kmph | 280 kmph |
| Technology | Japanese Shinkansen Tech | Indigenous Propulsion & Design |
| Cost | High (Imported) | Approx. ₹27.86 Cr per coach |
The B28 is just the beginning. The Ministry of Railways has already confirmed that the learnings from the B28 project in Bengaluru will pave the way for the B35, an even faster indigenous train designed for 350 kmph.
The Indian government has signaled that it will not rely solely on foreign technology for its high-speed future by launching the B28 project in Bengaluru,.This "Bharat-made" bullet train represents a massive victory for domestic manufacturing and ensures that India’s future high-speed corridors—like Chennai-Bengaluru or Delhi-Varanasi—could be powered entirely by home-grown technology.
