THE World University Rankings 2027 are out, with IISc Bengaluru ranked 254th globally and emerging as India’s top-ranked university. Check India’s leading universities, global top 10 and the three Asian universities in the top 15.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 have been released, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru emerging as the highest-ranked Indian university. IISc secured the 254th position globally in the latest rankings.
Several other Indian institutions also feature in the global list, including Jamia Millia Islamia, Lovely Professional University (LPU) and Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT).
Top Indian Universities In THE World University Rankings 2027
IISc Bengaluru ranks 254th globally, making it the top-ranked Indian university in THE World University Rankings 2027. Jamia Millia Islamia, KIIT and LPU have been placed in the same 510–550 global ranking band. The banded rankings indicate that these universities share a position range rather than having individual global ranks.

Oxford Retains Top Spot; MIT Remains Second
The University of Oxford has retained the number one position in THE World University Rankings for the 11th consecutive year. Its performance is linked to indicators including research productivity, international co-authorship and the doctorate-to-staff ratio.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains at second place, with only a 0.1-point difference in the overall score from Oxford. MIT recorded stronger performance in areas including its student-staff ratio, citation impact and research strength.
THE World University Rankings 2027: Top 10 Universities Globally
The top 10 universities are dominated by institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom. Seven universities in the top 10 are from the US, while three are from the UK.
Stanford University recorded one of the notable movements within the top 10, rising from fifth in 2026 to a joint third position in 2027 with Princeton University. Meanwhile, the University of California, Berkeley and Yale University are tied at ninth place.

Three Asian Universities Enter Top 15
For the first time, three Asian universities have featured in the top 15 of the THE World University Rankings. China’s Tsinghua University secured 11th place globally, followed by Peking University at 13th and the National University of Singapore at 15th.
The rankings highlight the growing representation of Asian institutions among the world’s highest-ranked universities, with all three securing places within the global top 15.
