International Coffee Day 2026 will be celebrated on October 1, highlighting coffee’s global importance and the livelihoods that depend on it. The International Coffee Organization (ICO) has launched its 2026 campaign, “Coffee is Part of the Solution,” positioning the coffee sector’s contribution to sustainable development at the centre of this year’s observance.
Why International Coffee Day Is Celebrated
International Coffee Day is marked annually on October 1. ICO member states agreed in March 2014 to carve a common date for the celebration. The day recognises the diversity and quality of coffee while highlighting participants across the coffee value chain.
It also emphasises sustainability, climate risks, productivity and economic resilience.

India’s Coffee Industry
India has a distinct position in the global coffee sector. The Coffee Board of India, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, says coffee is traditionally cultivated in the Western Ghats, particularly Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Cultivation has also expanded into Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and northeastern states.
India’s coffee is predominantly export-oriented. The Coffee Board states that about 65-70% of domestic coffee production is exported, while Indian Robusta has developed a presence in markets.
According to the Coffee Board’s 2024-25 annual report, India’s estimated coffee production reached a record 3,63,500 metric tonnes, comprising 1,05,700 tonnes of Arabica and 2,57,800 tonnes of Robusta. India exported 3,88,925 tonnes of coffee, including re-exports, to 126 countries during the year.
Sustainability and the Future Behind Coffee
International Coffee Day also offers a chance to review how the sector can remain resilient as producers face changing weather conditions, production costs and evolving global demand. India’s Coffee Board promotes sustainability standards and research.
The day also marks the economic chain behind every cup and the need for sustainable production, stronger farmer livelihoods, innovation and cooperation across the coffee industry.
