NEET UG 2027 exam will be conducted in computer based test format now. The exam conducting authority, National Testing Agency, NTA, has started looking for exam centres which have the appropriate IT infrastructure and space required to conduct the exam smoothly. NTA has asked for AICTE’s help in the matter.
With this, it is clear that the NEET exam this year will be conducted in the CBT mode and is finally moving away from the traditional pen and paper based test format. The decision is a part of the efforts to better the conduct of national level entrance exams.
NTA Asks AICTE To Identify Suitable Government Colleges and Schools
NTA has approached All India Council for Technical Education, AICTE, to assess the available infrastructure in government schools and colleges that could be used and developed as testing centres.
Following this, AICTE has reached out to heads of state run government higher education institutes which are AICTE approved. These institutes include many engineering colleges, polytechnic institutes, universities and other state run management and technical institutes which are approved by AICTE.
According to a senior NTA official, “The centres of CBT cannot be outsourced to small private players and have to be chosen after assessment on strict parameters. AICTE, being the technical education regulator, has a lot of tech colleges which are equipped with the infrastructure,"
NEET Exam From PBT to CBT Mode
The decision to conduct the NEET UG exam in the computer based test format is a part of reforming the system. NTA already conducts many national level entrance exams such as CAT, in the CBT format. Unlike the traditional OMR sheet filling system, students appearing for NEET 2027 will have to answer questions digitally on a computer screen at the allotted centres. So, this will be something that the students will have to get acquainted with.
After the controversy surrounding the NEET exam 2026, the government’s decision to move NEET to CBT mode comes with the vision to make conducting the exam in a fair, transparent and error free system.
What Does It Mean For NEET Aspirants?
Students planning to appear for the NEET exam should get acquainted with the CBT mode as soon as possible. Since the exam centres are still being identified and developed, students have to wait for the final exam centre list. The process of choosing the preferred exam centre is expected to still be the same as before, i.e. during the application process, but the final allocation will depend on administrative, technical and logistical feasibility.
To accommodate lakhs of students who appear for NEET every year, NTA has already started making provisions and creating a network of designated centres. Students will be notified once the final NEET exam centre list is released.
