Although Diana was a member of the British Royal Family, her character and humanitarian work made her one of the most admired members of the Royal Family.

In addition to her royal status, she drew an enormous international public following through her charity work and the fact that, unlike most royals, she broke the traditional boundaries separating royals from the wider community; thus, she was able to develop a genuine connection with people across all walks of life.

In 1997, following her untimely death, the term became widely used in public tributes to her that conveyed the profound sense of love and respect that people had for her.

Why was Princess Diana called the People’s Princess?

  3. Public connection: Diana had an extraordinary ability to connect with ordinary individuals during public engagements. Her warm demeanor, sincere conversation, and frequent eye contact made total strangers feel valued and connected emotionally.

  4. Emotional openness:Diana was open with people regarding her struggles and feelings, which allowed them to connect with her on a personal level. By opening up about her problems, she helped people change their beliefs about how royals are aloof and distant, and instead showed them that she was just like everyone else.

  5. Modern royal image: Diana also brought a new type of interaction with royals through her advocacy of compassion and accessibility to people outside of the royal family. As such, the royal family became more modern, compassionate, and connected to each other and to the people than they had ever been before.
