Jeffrey Preston Bezos is the founder of Amazon. He was born on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His early life was not easy. His mother was just a teenager when he was born, and later she remarried to Mike Bezos when Jeffrey was 4 years old. Jeffrey had a mechanical aptitude since he was quite young.

In the summer of 1994, Jeff Bezos left his Wall Street career and he moved to Bellevue, Washington as he had a vision to build a bookstore that is completely online. This idea struck him because of the increasing usage of the internet.

He initially named the company "Cadabra" but later changed the name to Amazon as the earlier name had a similarity to “cadaver” (A&E Television Networks, 2015). From selling just books, Amazon slowly expanded to music, electronics, clothing, groceries, and cloud computing. Today, it is one of the most valuable companies in the world.
The Michigan Journal of Economics States: “On July 5, 1994, Amazon was officially founded under the name “Cadabra” (as in abracadabra) by young Princeton graduate Jeff Bezos within a garage space in his rental home in Bellevue, Washington. However, after just a few months, Bezos switched the name to Amazon Inc because of Cadabra’s unappealing similarity to the word “cadaver” (A&E Television Networks, 2015). Roughly a year later, the Amazon website was officially published as an online bookseller delivering to all 50 US states and 45 countries from that same garage space.”
When Did Jeff Bezos Step Down as CEO?
Jeffrey Bezos stepped down as CEO and handed the company’s over the leadership to Andy Jassy in July 2021. Jassy has been associated with Amazon since 1997 and he played a key role in growing AWS which is Amazon's cloud computing division.
Bezos still continues to serve as Executive Chairman of the company's board. He might not be running the day to day operations of the company but he has a major hold on the company’s direction.
