Which state is the Largest Producer of Titanium in India?

Titanium is a critical and strategic metal owing to its low density, good strength-to-weight ratio, and exceptional corrosion resistance. Titanium is not found as a free metal in the earth. It mainly found deposits of Ilmenite (FeTiO3) and Rutile (TiO2)

India holds roughly 11% of the world’s ilmenite reserves. These minerals are mostly found in the heavy beach placer sands running along the country's eastern and southern coastlines.

Which State is the Largest Producer of Titanium in India?

In India, Andhra Pradesh holds the largest share of titanium ore resources specifically in the form of Ilmenite accounting for over 103 million tons of the country's total mineral resources. Odisha and Tamil Nadu also possess a major portion of these coastal placer reserves.

However, from an industrial and commercial refining perspective Kerala is the center of titanium production in India with the fully integrated titanium processing facility such as the Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML) located in Chavara, Kollam.

KMML extracts high-grade ilmenite and rutile directly from Kerala's coastal sands where the local ilmenite uniquely boasts a TiO2 concentration of up to 60.54%, significantly higher than most global deposits.

Uses of Titanium

Titanium is a vital asset across high-tech industries due to its distinct metallurgical traits:

_uses Titanium

Aerospace and Defense

Titanium is significantly used to construct airframes, jet engine components, gas turbines, missiles, and naval structural parts due to its structural integrity at high temperatures.

Industrial Chemicals

Titanium is vital for fabricating anti-pollution systems, chemical reactors, and heat exchangers that endure harsh, corrosive environments.

Pigments and Coatings

Most of the Titanium over 90% of extracted titanium ore is processed into Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) white pigment which is used to add high opacity and durability to paints, plastics, paper, and cosmetics.

Biomedical Applications

Titanium is highly biocompatible, titanium is a standard material for advanced bone tissue engineering, orthopedic implants, and pacemakers.

Key Highlights

Andhra Pradesh

Largest Resource Reserve Base

Hosts major deposits like the Srikurmam and Bhimunipatnam placers with massive heavy mineral concentrations.

Kerala

Leading Refined Metal & Chemical Producer

Houses KMML and IREL (India) Limited. Processes the highest-grade native ilmenite into commercial TiO2 pigment and titanium sponge.

Odisha

Major Raw Placer Exporter

Contains expansive red sand and paleo-strandline reserves actively managed for mineral separation.

India has a strong global footprint in Titanium resources while Andhra Pradesh rules the charts for the sheer volume of underground resources, where Kerala operates as the functional capital of titanium manufacturing and value-added processing by advancing indigenous Kroll reduction processes and expanding chemical separation technologies remain key national priorities to transition India from a raw ore exporter to a self-reliant powerhouse of structural titanium metal
