Which is the Smallest Continent in the World?

Last Updated: Mar 9, 2026, 18:15 IST

Australia is recognized as the smallest of the seven continents, covering roughly 7.7 to 8.6 million square kilometers. While it serves as both a country and a continent, it accounts for only 5% of the world’s total land area. It is characterized by diverse climates and unique southern hemisphere biodiversity.

The land surface of earth is broken down into seven major continents which include Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.

Australia is the smallest continent by land area with a size of approximately 7.7-8.6 million square kilometers, which is approximately 5-6 percent of the total area of the planet.

What is a Continent?

A continent is a massive solid piece of land that is usually adjacent to other lands by seas or other significant topographical features. It has no one formal definition worldwide, but rather depends on the geographic convention applied to education and statistics.

The United Nations Statistics Division uses regional groupings as data purposes and considers them as flexible boundaries but not hard.

Continents by Area

  • Land area is also described as following the following ranking of continents in descending order.

  • This conformity level of order validates that Australia is the smallest.

Smallest Continent Explained

Australia is the smallest continent in terms of land area and is always referred to in education and examination. It measures between 7.7 and 8.6 million km2 in size according to sources.

In comparison, Antarctica has the least population because it does not have permanent people as it is inhabited by temporary researchers.

Australia is a fully southern hemisphere state that borders on the Indian and Pacific oceans. It is characterized by huge deserts and semi-arid interior, coastal plains and ranges such as the Great dividing range.

Inland climates are arid, whereas coastal climates are either tropical or temperate, which sustain inimitable biodiversity.

Countries and Population

The Australian continent mainly includes mainland Australia, Tasmania, and immediate islands. The Pacific islands of Oceania are also given broader definitions in order to treat them statistically. The country that houses the region is Australia, which dominates the population in the region.

Australia: Continent vs Country

Australia as a continent is a landmass. It is the Commonwealth of Australia as a country, which covers almost the whole of the continent and even the territories. This confusion resulted in the popular saying that Australia is a country and a continent seen in textbooks.

Geographic tables adopted worldwide such as UN schemes make the Australian/Oceania continent to have the least share of land among the continents. There is no official UN declaration of the smallest continent but statistics support the position.
