The Mercedes website states: “A record-breaker then, a record-breaker now. The Mercedes-Benz W196 R ‘Stromlinienwagen’ (Streamliner) has become the most valuable Grand Prix racing car ever after selling for €51.155 million euros ($53.9m/£42.8m) at auction.”

1. 1954/55 Mercedes-Benz W196R Stromlinienwagen

Mercedes entered the W196R Stromlinienwagen across the 1954 and 1955 seasons. Five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio piloted it to victory in the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix, while Stirling Moss set the fastest lap at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix at Monza in the same car before retiring. 

Only 14 Mercedes-Benz W196R chassis were ever built, and this Stromlinienwagen is the only one of just four streamliner versions ever to be offered at a public auction. It was sold at the RM Sotheby's auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart in February 2025.

2. 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R (Open-Wheel)

The open-wheel 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R, chassis 006, driven by five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio, sold for a then-record £19.6 million ($29.65 million) at the Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed sale in 2013. 

At the time of sale, it was the most expensive car ever sold at auction. The W196R was the car Fangio drove to the second of his five F1 titles in 1954, winning the German and Swiss Grands Prix in this exact chassis.

3. 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas W04

Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes W04, chassis number 4, fetched £15.1 million at RM Sotheby's auction held during the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend. Hamilton drove this specific car to his first-ever Mercedes victory at the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix. 

This is the only Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 car ever sold outside the company and remains the most valuable modern-era Formula 1 car ever auctioned.
