The United Nations (UN) is an international organisation founded in 1945 with the mission of maintaining international peace and security, fostering friendly relations among nations, and promoting international cooperation. The UN was formed immediately after World War II.
The main bodies of the UN include the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat.
The UN's member states have increased from the original 51 member states in 1945 to the current 193 member states. All UN member states are members of the General Assembly. The member states are made part of the UN upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
The UN was established by the signing of the UN Charter on 26 June 1945, when representatives of 50 countries gathered from 25 April to 26 June 1945 as World War II was about to end in 1945. The United Nations was formed on 24 October 1945 with the signing of the UN Charter with the hope that it would prevent another world war.
With its headquarters in New York City, the UN, since then, has been working to maintain international peace and security, international laws, and protect human rights. The UN has also set Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. The UN member states have also agreed to climate action to limit global warming.
In this article, we will learn the names of 193 countries that are part of the UN.
