Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced two important social welfare measures to reduce people's financial burden and promote better mobility within the population. The announcements form the main component of one of the key promises of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) election manifesto.
The state government has launched the Annapoorani Super Six Scheme under which people will receive three free LPG cylinders every year and announced a considerable extension of the free public transport system known as Vetri Payanam by including new categories of bus and making the system available for the transgender population.
The 'Annapoorani Super Six' Initiative:
Initially launched as TVK's flagship project for the welfare of households, 'Annapoorani Super Six' now serves as government policy.
The main aim of this initiative is to provide energy price relief to households that are affected by rising fuel prices.

'Vetri Payanam' Scheme: Free Bus Travel Extended for Women and Transgender Individuals
In addition to providing relief from the cost of cooking gas, Chief Minister Vijay also introduced an extension of public transport subsidies under a revamped scheme, Vetri Payanam (previously known as Vidiyal Payanam).
The new transport policy will come into effect on October 2nd (Gandhi Jayanthi) and make it possible to remove limits on certain routes and integrate marginalized social groups.
Important Features of the Transit Expansion:
-
Inclusion of Transgenders: Individuals who are members of the transgender community in Tamil Nadu can now take rides for free in the buses set aside for them.
-
Improved Bus Services: Free rides previously reserved only for local transport can now be accessed through the buses they use in the urban centres.
-
Cross-District and Hilly Movement: The previous ban preventing eligible rides to the buses that travel outside the urban areas has also been lifted, allowing women and girl students whose schools and colleges are far from home to enjoy free rides in various buses.
-
No Limitation on Income: There is no stopping individuals from making as many rides in a day as they want.
-
Annual Cost: The total cost for the expansion will be around ₹6,000 crore every year for the state government.
