Indian Soldiers Win Gold at World Rowing Cup for the First Time

Two Indian soldiers made world history by winning World Rowing Cup III for the first time. Find out their names along with which countries won silver and bronze medal.

The World Rowing Cup III concluded in June, 2026. The winners were unexpected since they are the first ones to win Gold for their country. The two soldiers of the Indian Army helped India climb to the first position in the World Rowing Cup competition. 

India has never won any medals in rowing before 2026. India has sent a 10 member squad at the tournament, 17 athletes are from the Indian army and 1 is from the Indian navy. This shows that India heavily invested in the rowing competition which helped the athletes in securing the spot. 

Who Won Gold at the World Rowing Cup III?

Two Indian soldiers Ujjwal Kumar Singh and Lakshay serving as Havaldars in the Indian Army won Gold at the World Rowing Cup III 2026. They reached the finish line in 6 minutes and 26.09 seconds in the Men's Double Sculls gold medal at World Rowing Cup Stage 3.

This tournament took place in Lucerne, Switzerland. The silver medal was won by Hong Kong with a record time of 6 minutes 27.16 seconds and the bronze medal was won by Netherlands with a record of 6 minutes 27.36 seconds. 

World Rowing Cup Explained 

One might wonder why the World Rowing Cup takes place in I, II and III format. Let us understand what the three demarcations mean. The three different numbers are known as regatta. Each country wins points at the regatta, in the end, the country with the highest points is awarded the World Rowing Cup Championship title. 

Round I is the early stage of the competition where the fitness of the teams is put to test and it is usually hosted in Europe. 

Round II is hosted mid year and is much more physically demanding in comparison to the first round. 

Round III is the final tally round which decides which country would win at the Championship. It is the highest form of preparation for the players before the ultimate championship takes place.
