The Indian Navy has achieved a major milestone in its push for defense self-reliance by simultaneously commissioning three frontline indigenously built platforms—INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, West Bengal.

The Indian Navy successfully completed a rare simultaneous tri-commissioning ceremony in Kolkata presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The induction of INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak and INS Agray marks a defining milestone in the country's domestic warship-building trajectory.

These platforms are designed entirely by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. These three frontline vessels showcase the growing maturity of India's indigenous defense sector with local content in each vessel exceeding 75%. Their entry into service reflects a highly coordinated effort involving major public shipyards and over 200 Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Expanding India's Naval power by introducing the three New Platforms

The simultaneous induction represents India's balanced approach to modernizing the fleet where each platform addresses a completely distinct and critical operational domain for the Indian Navy, spanning high-intensity surface combat, deep-sea exploration and shallow-water anti-submarine defense.

INS Dunagiri (Project 17A Stealth Frigate)

INS Dunagiri drastically elevates the Navy’s blue-water combat capabilities as the fifth stealth frigate built under the prestigious Project 17A initiative.

It features an advanced hull form engineered from the ground up to reduce radar cross-section, ensuring low visibility during high-stakes missions.

It is  armed with potent BrahMos surface-to-surface cruise missiles for long-range offensive strikes.

Its air defense is equipped with a state-of-the-art Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system to safeguard naval task forces from airborne threats.

INS Sanshodhak (Survey Vessel Large)

The induction of INS Sanshodhak gives India a massive edge in mapping and securing its maritime boundaries coinciding perfectly with World Hydrography Day,

It is built to conduct precise coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys, collecting vital oceanographic and geophysical data for both tactical defense and civilian navigation. It includes Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to peer deep into the ocean floor.

INS Agray (Anti-Submarine Shallow Water Craft)

INS Agray serves as a heavily armed shield for India’s immediate maritime zones with littoral (coastal) waters facing evolving threats.

The fourth of the Arnala-class vessels, optimized explicitly to hunt down and eliminate hostile submarines trying to slip into shallower waters. Packed with lightweight torpedoes, indigenously developed anti-submarine rocket launchers, and specialized shallow-water sonar systems.

For maneuverability it utilizes quiet water-jet propulsion to maintain high speed and agility while suppressing its own underwater noise signature to evade detection.

The simultaneous commissioning of three complex naval vessels at a single event is an extraordinarily rare feat in global naval logistics. It is only the second time in India's independent history that a tri-commissioning has taken place following a similar milestone achieved in Mumbai.

According to Ministry of Defence officials also aiming to commission a total of 19 warships in 2026 alone. Over a two-year period, this aggressive production tempo will place over 30 new hulls into active service, reinforcing India’s role as a net security provider across the strategically vital Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The construction of these platforms directly generated extensive direct and indirect employment across the nation, validating the core economic objectives of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
