Hidden 264-Meter-Deep Underground Lake Discovered Beneath Desert, Revealing Life Thriving in Total Darkness

Researchers discovered a massive underground lake, Dragon’s Breath Cave, 264 meters beneath the Kalahari Desert. Isolated from sunlight, this unique ecosystem supports organisms that have adapted to total darkness.

Years of change and erosion have resulted in an underground lake system beneath Kalahari Desert approximately 264m below ground, which was only recently discovered. There is no direct access to this ecosystem due to its being blocked off from surface warming sunlight since it is over 100% protected from the external environment so therefore this area is able to maintain its own species of unusual life forms that have adapted to exist in an absence of sunlight forever.

This new discovery now challenges previous views of how far down and in what extreme conditions can support any type of organism, instead of depending solely on photosynthesis, the organisms will depend on alternative forms of energy and very unique processes that allow each organism to survive independently of another type of organism existing in that same area. The information gained from this discovery has added substantially to our knowledge of all hidden ecosystems located on planet earth, as well as generated multiple questions regarding if life can exist in similarly extreme locations to where this lake system was discovered.

How Dragon’s Breath Cave Formed Beneath the Desert?

After millions of years, groundwater in the desert has eroded limestone rock and created several large underground caverns, when they eventually filled with water, those caverns became what are now known as Dragon's Breath Cave and one of the world's largest undiscovered lakes.

Dissolving Limestone Under Water

Millions of years ago, rainwater containing slightly acidic carbon dioxide fell upon limestone and slowly eroded it away by working through small cracks in the rock for many years. As this corrosive groundwater continued to flow through these paths, it eventually dissolved large areas of limestone to create huge underground passageways.

Cavities Forming Under Ground

As more and more rocks dissolved, they connected with one another to create a network of caverns below the ground. Over time, some caverns trapped large amounts of water that created an underground lake system where there is currently a vast desert.

Preserving the Cave Over Millions of Years

Due to its depth, the cave has not been subject to surface weathering or erosion from the sun for thousands of years. Therefore, its structure has remained intact and the conditions within have been stable for millions of years.

Today’s Dragon’s Breath Cave

Today, Dragon's Breath Cave is one of the largest underground lakes in the world that has developed solely as a result of the natural movement of groundwater through erosion and other geological forces.

Animal Life in Permanent Darkness

The Dragon's Breath Cave contains some of Earth's most unique organisms, which are able to survive extreme environmental conditions, the lake located in this cave is totally dark and receives has had an extremely stable temperature with a very low amount of food available as well as adapt to these extreme environmental conditions, over a prolonged period of time.

One of the best examples of an animal that was affected by the unique environment of the Dragon's Breath Cave would be the blind golden cave catfish. This fish has existed in the caves for an extended period of time without contact with the surrounding water so it eventually lost its ability to see. Instead of having visual sight, these fish developed other very sensitive senses to be able to sense motion in order to find prey and quickly orient itself in the dark, still water.
