The Blue Moon, which is any year with a second full moon in one month, will be one of the most viewed celestial events in 2026. The name "Blue Moon" does not mean that the moon will appear blue, but rather that the rare occurrence of two full moons falling within one month creates a unique and thrilling opportunity for both amateur and experienced astronomers and casual stargazers.

In 2026, thousands of people around the world will look to the sky, due to the incredible visibility of both full moons, the frequency of both full moons in 2026, and the ideal conditions for taking pictures of the night sky.

What is a Blue Moon?

The Blue Moon refers to when there is an incomplete Moon cycle between two full moons that occur in one month.

Typically, because of how many lunar days are in a year, there is only one full moon each month. But sometimes there can be more than one full moon in a single month, therefore when there are only two or less, they are called a Blue Moon.

Blue Moons do not mean that the Moon is 'blue' in color but follow modern definitions and have been used for many hundreds of years in astronomy.

Blue Moons are rare occurrences, appearing only once every two to three years, so they are very much anticipated by people who enjoy observing the sky.

Date and Time of Blue Moon 2026

The 2026 Blue Moon will occur on May 31, 2026. That will be the second full moon for the month of May 2026. The Blue Moon will most likely be visible at 4:45 a.m. (EDT) on May 31, but this timing may change from area to area throughout the world because it occurs late in May.

Therefore, it is also a very unique event to have two full moons in the same month and also creates a very rare lunar calendar configuration because it is at the end of the month which contributes to 2026 having specifically 13 full moons for that year as opposed to the usual 12 per year.

When and Where to Watch in India?

In India on the evening of May 31st, 2026, people will also have the ability to see the Blue Moon but the best time to view this event will be directly after sunset, i.e., between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (IST), depending on the location within the country. Since India is ahead of the United States in time zones, those in India will see the moon rise later in the evening than when observed in the US.

Many of the major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata will have no issues seeing the Blue Moon if the weather permits. In many instances, the best way to see the moon will be to go outside to open areas such as terraces, parks, and areas away from urban centres. Avoidance of city lights will make the moon even brighter and more detailed because of the decreased amount of light interference.

When and Where to Watch in the US?

On May 31st, 2026 at 4:45 a.m. EDT, the Blue Moon will reach its maximum brightness for the entire United States but the best chance to see it will be at moonrise on the evening before at approximately the same time.

The eastern portion of the United States will see the moonrise in its entirety earlier than the rest of the country due to the differences in time zone. Most major cities including New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles will be able to clearly see the Blue Moon.

When it rises, it may appear a little bigger and more yellowish than normal due to being close to the horizon. The best places to see this lunar phenomenon in the USA will be in rural or coastal areas that are away from light pollution.
