8 Major Earthquakes Shake 7 Countries In 5 Days: Are Recent Quakes Connected?

The ground beneath our feet feels less stable than ever this week as several countries were hit by earthquakes within a span of a week. In a surprisingly brief five-day window a sequence of eight powerful earthquakes tremor were felt across seven countries which shattered local infrastructure and captured global media attention. 

From Asia to the Americas, communities are picking up the pieces of their lives after experiencing the intensity of recent earthquakes around the world. 

The most devastating blow came through the earthquake around the Venezuelan coast where back-to-back tremors left more than 1,400 dead.

What Causes an Earthquake? 

To understand why earthquakes happen, let me help you look at how Earth is built. Think of the Earth’s crust not as a solid shell but as a big puzzle made of huge moving rock pieces called tectonic plates. And the edges where these puzzle pieces meet are called tectonic boundaries. 

The rough edges of these boundaries sometimes get stuck against each other when the tectonic plate keeps moving around. 

Finally when the stuck edge snaps and breaks free there comes a massive burst of energy that reaches the surface. And that is when you experience a natural disaster called an earthquake. 

Which Countries were hit by Earthquakes in Last 5 Days? 

Over the past week, these tectonic boundaries became hyperactive which sent destructive shockwaves through populated cities and coastal zones alike. 

According to reports from the official USGS earthquake monitoring systems, the sudden spike in earthquakes spanned multiple active plate edges across three continents and the following countries: 

1. Venezuela: The country suffered a catastrophic doublet sequence with 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes. The tremors struck 39 seconds apart near the northern coast which heavily leveled La Guaira and Caracas.

2. Japan and Philippines: The Pacific Ring of Fire roared back to life with a powerful 7.2 magnitude quake off Japan's northern coast and a 6.5 magnitude tremor in the Philippines.

3. United States: Northern California residents were shaken out of bed by a sudden 5.6 magnitude tremor.

4. Afghanistan and Pakistan: The Hindu Kush region experienced intense tremors, logging 6.2 and 5.5 magnitude quakes that shook regional borders.

5. Nepal: A milder yet alarming 3.8 magnitude tremor added to the week's global tally.

Are Recent Earthquakes Connected Across the World?

Social media lines are bound to be a buzz with major cities are witnessing earthquakes almost simultaneously. Everyone fears that a global chain reaction is on the way. But leading seismologists urge calm and explain that the Earth isn't tearing itself apart in a coordinated strike.

Earthquakes occur when tectonic plates grind past each other. While a massive shock can trigger local aftershocks, it simultaneously lacks the power to jump across oceans to activate distant plate boundaries. 

"It is purely coincidental," noted Caltech seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones regarding the clustered timing. The planet averages 10 to 15 quakes above magnitude 7 annually; occasionally these random events simply line up on the calendar.
