Key Factors
- Category-wise Variation: For OBC-NCL and EWS, the cutoff is typically 10% lower than the General category. For SC, ST, and PwD candidates, the required scores are significantly lower.
- Direct Admission vs. Interview: Candidates with top scores often get direct admission. For some branches, meeting the cutoff only leads to a written test or an interview for the final selection.
- Paper Difficulty: If the GATE 2026 paper for a specific branch was tougher than last year, the cutoff scores might drop slightly.
Important Steps for Admission
- Check the GATE Scorecard: Official scorecards can be downloaded from March 27, 2026.
- Register on COAP: It is mandatory to register on the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) to receive admission offers from any IIT.
- Apply to IIT Madras: Visit the official IIT Madras M.Tech Admission portal to fill out the application form before the deadline in April.
