World Environment Day 2025: Date, Theme, UN Chief's Message and Host City This Year

World Environment Day 2025: Imagine waking up in a world in which the air is pure, rivers flow clean, and forests teem with life. Our environment is not merely a setting for our lives—it is the basis of our health, well-being, and future.

However, each day our actions decide the future of this great planet. From the breath we take to the water we drink, everything is connected with the environment. World Environment Day reminds us that the protection of our world is not only a duty but a survival necessity for ourselves and for future generations.

Date and Theme for World Environment Day 2025 - #BeatPlasticPollution

Date for World Environment Day 2025: 5th June 2025

World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5th. The United Nations in 2025 has selected the theme of "Beat Plastic Pollution" highlighting one of the most problematic issues for the environment.

How Does Plastic Get into Fish?

  1. Plastic Breaks Down: Once in the ocean, sunlight, waves, and time break larger plastic items into tiny, tiny pieces. These are called microplastics. Think of them as crumbs of plastic, smaller than a grain of rice! Even tiny fibers from our clothes, when washed, can end up in the ocean as microplastics.

  2. Fish Mistake It for Food: The ocean is full of these tiny plastic bits floating around. For small fish and other sea creatures, these microplastics can look just like their regular food – things like plankton or tiny plant bits. So, they accidentally eat the plastic along with their real meals.

  3. Plastic Moves Up the Food Chain: Now, imagine a bigger fish that eats those smaller fish. When the bigger fish eats the smaller fish, it also eats the plastic that the smaller fish had inside it. This continues up the food chain, so even large fish like tuna or salmon can end up with plastic inside them because they've eaten many smaller fish that ate plastic.

  4. On Your Plate: When these fish are caught for us to eat, they sometimes still have these microplastics in their bodies, especially in their digestive systems. While cooking or cleaning fish might remove some of it, studies have found microplastics in the edible parts of fish too.

The theme urges people, societies, and governments to take strong steps against plastic pollution, supporting sustainable alternatives and less consumption of plastic in our daily lives.

Plastic from Fossil Fuels: A Simple Explanation

Ever wonder where most plastic comes from? It's made from fossil fuels—ancient materials like oil, natural gas, and coal, formed deep within the Earth over millions of years.

How It's Made:

  1. Digging It Up: We extract fossil fuels from the ground.
  2. Breaking It Down: In big factories, these fuels are heated and processed, breaking them into tiny building blocks called "monomers."
  3. Building Chains: These tiny blocks are then linked together into long chains called "polymers"—that's plastic!
  4. Shaping It: Finally, this plastic is melted and molded into everyday items like bottles, toys, and packaging.

Why It Matters:

Using fossil fuels for plastic is a big deal because these resources are limited and their production can cause pollution. Plus, plastic lasts for a very long time, leading to lots of waste that harms our planet.

Plastic Pollution by the Numbers

  • Did you know? 400 million tons of plastic are manufactured every year, and it's projected to triple by 2060 (UNEP, 2025).
  • Just 9% of all plastic ever made has been recycled. What about the rest? It's been incinerated, buried or has found its way into polluting our planet.
  • Around 11 million tonnes of plastic finds its way into the ocean annually. That is the equivalent of us dumping 2,000 dump trucks of plastic into the world's oceans, rivers, and lakes every day (UNEP, 2025).
  • More plastic than fish in the sea by 2050 (EMF, 2016).
Over 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds are annually killed by marine plastic pollution (UK Government, 2018).
  • 80% of all marine debris ever studied is plastic. (IUCN, 2021)
  • It's estimated that UK homes discard a surprising 1.7 billion pieces of plastic packaging per week (Big Plastic Count, 2024). That's equivalent to around 100 billion pieces per year – the same as the number of stars in our Galaxy!

UN Chief's Message and Host City for World Environment Day 2025

Every year, the UN Secretary-General provides a message showing the international importance of World Environment Day. This year, the UN Chief sent a heartfelt message to the world-

"Plastic pollution is choking our planet – harming ecosystems, well-being, and the climate.

Plastic waste clogs rivers, pollutes the ocean, and endangers wildlife.

And as it breaks down into smaller and smaller parts, it infiltrates every corner of Earth: from the top of Mount Everest, to the depths of the ocean; from human brains; to human breastmilk.

Yet there is a movement for urgent change.

We are seeing mounting public engagement…

Steps towards reusability and greater accountability…

And policies to reduce single-use plastics and improve waste management.

But we must go further, faster.

In two months, countries will come together to hammer-out a new global treaty to end plastic pollution.

We need an ambitious, credible and just agreement this year.

One that covers the life-cycle of plastic, through the perspective of circular economies…

That responds to the needs of communities…

That aligns with broader environmental goals, the sustainable development goals, and beyond…

And that is implemented fast and in full.

I urge negotiators to return to talks in August determined to build a common path through their differences and deliver the treaty our world needs.

Together, let’s end the scourge of plastic pollution and build a better future for us alla."

The annual address by the UN Chief usually highlights the exigency of joint action, green development, and global cooperation to address environmental emergencies such as plastic pollution, climate change, and loss of biodiversity.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) , the host city for World Environment Day 2025 is the Republic of Korea. The event is globally coordinated with major activities and celebrations in cities around the world, including significant participation from India.
