Who is Vandi Verma? All About Indian-Origin NASA Engineer Powering Mars Rover Autonomy

Vandi Verma (born Punjab, India) was the head of NASA who made the breakthrough of autonomous drives on the Perseverance rover on Mars in December 2025, the first autonomous drive that operates without any direct human interaction. 

Her work designates Mars 2020 as the first mission to think independently through rovers, and it is only possible because she is the Chief Engineer.

Vandi Verma: Early Life and Education

Verma was born in the family of an Indian Air Force pilot and a teacher near Halwara Air Force Station and he was inspired by the world of science and aviation. 

She was given a B.Tech in Electronics at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, which was followed by a MS and PhD degree in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University (2005) with a thesis of Tractable Particle Filters of robot fault Diagnosis.

How Vandi Verma Entered NASA?

Verma joined NASA Ames Research Center as an intern where he tested Mars rovers in Chile in the Atacama Desert and created PLEXIL (Plan Execution Interchange Language). 

Later in 2007 she joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) of NASA, where she assisted Opportunity and Spirit rovers in a record-breaking mission to the Endurance Crater.

What was Her Role in Uber Systems Ingenuity Operations?

Being the Chief Engineer of Robotic Operations of the Mars 2020 Perseverance mission, Verma managed broader interactions between the rover and the helicopter, such as the deployment of Ingenuity by Perseverance in April 2021 and the 72-flight technology demonstration of Ingenuity through 2024. 

• Her experience in autonomy was used to aid Ingenuity in scouting Perseverance routes through aerial means in Jezero Crater, but overall leadership was provided by the team of MiMi Aung at JPL.

• The autonomy frameworks developed by Verma (such as PLEXIL, created as an Ames intern, and MEXEC multi-mission planning) were implemented in Perseverance systems that transmitted flight data and images made by Ingenuity to Earth. 

• These instruments provided smooth coordination of the rover and helicopter even without constant human control which contributed to the independent navigation of Ingenuity through cameras and sensors on board. 

• No individual Ingenuity-exclusive projects are attributed to her alone in the priorities of Perseverance rover.

Vandi Verma’s Major Contributions at NASA

Verma made progress in rover autonomy AutoNav (terrain avoidance), AEGIS (AI geology targeting on Curiosity), and SSIM (surface simulation on Perseverance). 

She incorporated vision-language models of Perseverance arm, so that the sample can be collected without Earth commands.

Mars Sample Return and Dragonfly are based on the innovations by Verma who works with CMU to create resistant AI. Her role is motivating to the world of STEM, a mixture of Indian ingenuity and NASA missions.
