The World Health Organization (WHO) considers the PM2.5 level of 5 ug/m2 as safe. This limit is however well surpassed by most of the countries.

As per the report from IQ Air, Pakistan is leading in air pollution index with the recent global air quality report indicating that the country has the highest pollutant levels in the world.

In Pakistan, PM 2.5 is 13 times higher than the WHO limit.

This implies that the pollutants can reach the level of exceeding 65 μg/m³ and beyond which is regarded as very unhealthy. The exact μg/m³ concentration in Pakistan is 67.3 as per the report.

India falls in the top 10 list of being the most polluted countries in the world. It is 6th in the list and has and average PM 2.5 level of approximately 48.9 ug/m3. This nearly exceeds WHO limits by 10 fold. According to IQ Air’s most polluted cities list, 5 cities out of the top 10 are from India which shows the pollution crisis in the country. 

What are the Reasons for High Pollution Levels Across the World? 

The reports according to WHO point to several significant contributors:

  • Coal powered energy and industrial emissions.

  • Vehicle pollution in populated cities.

  • Household combustion devices 

  • Forest fires and burning of crops

These factors are the most common reasons for air pollution in most countries.
