Omega Block Heatwave Hits Europe: Which Countries are Facing Extreme Temperatures?

Western European countries are experiencing an intense heatwave. Temperatures have exceeded previous records reaching 40.9 °C in several regions. It is disrupting daily life and triggering weather-related emergencies across the continent. This weather phenomenon is known as the Omega Block.

Countries like the Netherlands, France, Italy and the UK have been affected the most. France recorded its hottest day since 1947 hitting a temperature of 44.3 °C. Public transport was disrupted, schools shut and museums and air-conditioned cinema houses were opened as emergency shelters.

What is the Omega Block?

An omega block is an atmospheric pattern that occurs when a high-pressure system becomes closely sandwiched between two low-pressure systems. The jet streams formed the upward loops around the high-pressure zones. This looping flow of air closely resembles the Greek letter Ω, known as the Omega Block.

How is the omega Block causing Europe’s extreme Heatwave?

During the summer the jet streams naturally weaken and shift northwards in western Europe, high altitude winds blow from west to east over Europe along with the moving weather systems.

When the regular flow of the winds gets disrupted due to the regional atmospheric pressure system it develops large bends caused by low and high pressure. High-pressure zones build in the middle flanked by low-pressure zones on either side and form the Omega shape.

During the Omgea Block phenomenon, the warm air rising from the ground can not pass into the upper atmosphere. It gets trapped near the surface and keeps heating again which eventually results in the prolonged intense heat in the region. This is also called the Heat Dome

Omega Block is an immediate trigger that is caused by atmospheric and meteorological reasons. However, the main problem in Europe is structural such as highly concretised urban areas which cause the Urban Heat islands. The Albedo effect (how much sunlight a surface reflects). The Arctic region of Europe is warming faster than others and losing its glacier ice rapidly which absorbs heat instead of reflecting it.

Which countries are most affected by the 2026 heatwave Crisis?

Most of the Western countries like France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK are severely affected by the Omega Block. France's major urban centers are under severe heat alerts. Temperatures have breached the records, which is putting a huge pressure on the local power grids and public healths

Some of the neighboring countries of Western Europe are also experiencing heatwaves like parts of Spain, Belgium and Switzerland. These countries are also experiencing unseasonably high temperatures with health emergencies and are requesting citizens to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
