The first ‘Made in India’ Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft has successfully completed its maiden test flight at the newly inaugurated Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara, Gujarat. The aircraft's successful inaugural sortie represents an achievement for domestic aviation manufacturing.

The project aims to modernise the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) transport under the Atmanirbhar Bharat  (Self-reliant India) initiative of the government of India.

Manufacturer

The C-295 program is a trailblazer in Indian defense history by marking the first time a military aircraft is being manufactured in India by a private sector consortium. It is jointly built by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus Defence and Space

The project was initiated in the 2021 with the steady progress of the ₹21,935-crore project and an agreement for 56 aircraft. Airbus delivers 16 fly-away units directly from its assembly line in Seville, Spain.

The remaining 40 aircraft are being completely manufactured, assembled and tested at the Tata-Airbus FAL in Vadodara, India. The project integrates a domestic ecosystem involving over 37 Indian suppliers, primarily MSMEs, responsible for manufacturing more than 13,000 detail parts for the aircraft.

Key Features of C-295 Aircraft

The Airbus C-295 is a robust and a highly versatile tactical airlift platform designed to operate efficiently under extreme geographical and climatic conditions. Here the key features of the Craft

  • Payload and Troop Capacity: The aircraft can carry up to 9.2 tonnes of payload, 71 passengers or 50 fully equipped paratroopers.

  • Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL): It is engineered to operate from short, unprepared, or unpaved airstrips, allowing access to remote locations.

  • Multi-Mission Capability: It features a quick-change configuration by allowing it to seamlessly transition from cargo and troop transport to medical evacuation (Medevac), humanitarian disaster relief or maritime patrol.

  • Advanced Avionics:  It is equipped with a modern glass cockpit and digital flight decks which will help in reducing pilot workload and increase the situational awareness in complex tactical environments.

  • Rear Ramp Door: it has a rear ramp door for quick loading, unloading and aerial dropping of supplies.

What is the Significance of C-295 Military Aircraft?

The primary operational role of the C-295 is to replace the IAF’s legacy Avro-748 transport fleet, which has been in service for over six decades. The upgrade injects modern capabilities, improved fuel efficiency and significantly higher operational availability into the IAF's transport wing.

The C-295 can easily land and take off from the IAF's advanced landing grounds (ALGs) in  sensitive border regions like Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh with its Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) capabilities to ensure rapid deployment of troops, heavy machinery and supplies directly to forward locations where larger heavy-lift aircraft cannot operate.

The successful maiden flight of the first Made in India C-295 aircraft is a transformative moment that firmly positions India at the global aerospace market by breaking the monopoly of state-run manufacturing and establishing a robust private-sector ecosystem with Tata and local MSMEs.
