The FIFA World Cup 2026 is going to be the largest football event of all time. It will feature more teams, more games and more prize money than any World Cup has ever given out. With 48 teams battling each other, one will lift the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy and win a huge amount. But, what is the actual monetary prize that winners actually take home? And what do players themselves earn? Here is everything you need to know about the FIFA World Cup 2026 prize money.

How Much is the FIFA World Cup 2026 Total Prize Money?

A record of USD 727 million will be distributed to the 48 teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is a new record. This amount includes USD 655 million to be distributed as prize money according to the level of achievement of each team.

The Inside FIFA mentions: “With excitement mounting following the final draw that took place on 5 December 2025 in Washington DC, the FIFA Council approved a record-breaking financial contribution of USD 727 million to be distributed as a result of the FIFA World Cup 2026”

Further, all participating countries receive USD 1.5 million per team to help with preparations.

Trivia: The amount of prize money has almost doubled from the USD 440 million awarded at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Prize Money Breakdown: How Much Does Each Team Earn?

This is the official payout structure confirmed by FIFA. The money a team receives depends entirely on the round in which they leave the tournament.

On top of the above, every qualified team gets USD 1.5 million to prepare for the matches. This means that all the participating countries are guaranteed at least USD 10.5 million for participation.

Why is the Prize Money So Much Higher This Time?

There is no official reason for the high prize money. However, there are two significant reasons. First, the tournament has expanded. There are 48 teams competing for the first time ever, as opposed to 32.

Plus now there are 104 matches in comparison to 64 matches. The greater the number of teams and games played, the greater the number of TV deals, sponsorship and money flowing towards FIFA.

Secondly, FIFA is more widely distributing that money. With the number of teams doubled to 48, FIFA has also made the monetary prizes more attractive at each round of the tournament. With this change, if a team that once got nothing in earlier tournaments will now be going home with millions.

Do Players Get Paid Directly by FIFA?

This is the most crucial to grasp and many fans sometimes get it wrong. Players do not get paid by FIFA directly. The tournament prize money is given to National Federations and not to players. Each country's football association is rewarded with the prize money based on their performance, as determined by FIFA.

Think of it this way: FIFA is paying the country, not the player. How much the player gets is up to their own federation.

So How Do Players Get Money From FIFA?

The funds that arrive at the National Federations are distributed to players and coaching staff as per the country’s decision. Several federations offer a set bonus for participation in a competition and others offer bonuses for advancing through a tournament.

The majority of federations have an agreed upon bonus structure with the team prior to the tournament. The contracts majorly remain confidential.

In most cases, players get 30-50% of the total winnings approved by their federation. As the team advances, the more bonuses that are awarded. The amount of money per player can be huge for teams who make it to the finals or winning, and less for the ones that are eliminated early.

For top players, the FIFA World Cup money is not necessarily the biggest part of their earnings. So many stars such as Kylian Mbappé or Vinicius Jr make so much more money with their club deals and their sponsorships. However, for players from smaller countries, a successful run in the FIFA 2026 World Cup can help them prosper.
