10 Years of UPI: 10 Major Achievements Behind India’s Digital Payments Revolution
UPI completes 10 years in 2026. Discover the 10 major achievements that transformed India's digital payments ecosystem, made UPI the world's largest real-time payment system and set a global benchmark for financial innovation.
India's digital payments industry has seen major changes in the last ten years, due in large part to the role the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has played in this transformation. In April 2016, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) released UPI, which has now grown from a basic transfer mechanism into the largest real-time payments provider in the world, processing billions of transactions each year.
In the last 10 years from UPI’s launch, it has redefined money transfer, bill payments, online shopping and other ways of performing transactions in India. Apart from allowing for instant payments through QR codes, the platform has also expanded its operations to international markets, leading to financial inclusion of the masses and also helping India with the transition towards a digital economy.
What is UPI?
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) refers to a real-time payment system. It has been created by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and is utilized by people to transfer funds between bank accounts using smartphones without having to provide bank account information. Transactions may take place using mobile numbers, QR codes, UPI IDs, or connected bank accounts.
Currently, UPI is used for various payment systems, including e-commerce platforms, retail outlets, utility services, government services and interactions between individuals.
10 Major Achievements Behind India’s Digital Payments Revolution
Today, UPI powers payments across e-commerce platforms, retail stores, utility services, government programmes, and peer-to-peer transactions.
| Metric | Launch (FY 2017) | Milestone (FY 2026) |
| Live Banks on Network | 21 Banks | 741 Banks |
| Annual Transaction Volume | 1.78 Crore | 24,162 Crore |
| Annual Transaction Value | ₹0.07 Lakh Crore | ₹314 Lakh Crore |
| Global Real-Time Share | Nominal | 49% of World |
1. Became the World's Largest Real-Time Payment System
The pace of development of UPI over the decade can be assessed as a 13,000 times increase in the annual volume of transactions from merely 1.78 million transactions in 2016–17 to over 24 trillion transactions by 2025–26.
According to the analysis of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), UPI constitutes almost half of the global real-time payment volume. Having around 660 million transactions per day, UPI continuously beats international legacy systems in this respect.
2. Setting Historic All-Time High Records
The platform has been constantly improving its yearly records. In July 2026, UPI’s monthly volume was 23.66 billion transactions with the amount of ₹29.88 trillion transferred in one month.
On the busiest days, the system processes more than 763 million transactions in 24 hours making literally unprecedented moves with hardly any failures.
3. Established Instant QR Code Payments
UPI has made digital payments accessible by introducing interoperable QR codes. Street traders, Kirana shops, and large retailers have exchanged expensive POS mechanisms for cost-efficient QR codes.
Currently, peer-to-merchant (P2M) transactions have become the most popular form of daily UPI usage.
4. Strengthening Financial Inclusion through JAM Trinity
UPI uses Jan Dhan accounts, communication through mobile phones, and biometric identity proof to enhance accessibility to banking infrastructure for citizens in rural areas. People without banks or those who are poorly served by banking services can use banking services without visiting any bank branch.
The facility allows microtransactions, making it a frequently used method of transferring funds, as about 60% of transfers between people are under ₹500.
5. Built a World-Class Fintech Ecosystem
The open API architecture of UPI allows creating an ecosystem of various application developers. The applications given by PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm are based on the network of NPCI.
These changes resulted in the growth of venture capital investments and jobs in the tech industry as well as making digital payments an integral part of shopping activities.
6. Going Global: Cross-Border Footprint
The domestic system has turned into an international one. It is anticipated that by 2026 there will be UPI being accepted in 11 countries, including Singapore, UAE, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and Maldives.
In other words, Indian people will be able to use banks at home to pay abroad.
7. Ongoing Enhancement of Features and Innovations in Product Development
NPCI has meticulously rolled out structural innovations aimed at augmenting the functionality of the platform.
-
UPI Lite: By facilitating low-value transactions through a wallet on the device, it effectively eases the pressure on core banking systems.
-
Credit on UPI: It has enabled the integration of RuPay cards directly into UPI, making it possible for users to utilize credit.
-
UPI AutoPay: With the introduction of recurring mandate capabilities, UPI has gained the ability to manage subscription payments and settle bills painlessly.
-
UPI Circle and Delegated Payments: Primary account holders can set transaction constraints for family members effortlessly.
8. Empowered small enterprises and MSMEs
The introduction of Unified Payments Interface(UPI) has greatly minimized the difficulties posed in terms of working capital for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The instant bank settlements enabled precise cash flow management, reduced handling costs and helped generate a paper trail of digital transactions that assist small businesses in obtaining loans.
9. Secured Banking Participation Across 740+ Institutions
Institutional banking participation has grown at a steady pace over the last decade, starting with only 21 banks in 2016. At present, there are more than 740 banks participating in the system including leading public sector lenders, private banks, and regional rural banks.
10. Established India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Blueprint
The UPI has served as a key reference model for Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) proving to the world how technology can be developed for social use with the help of an open, interoperable, and non-proprietary framework.
