1. Cell Broadcast System
Why in news? Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, on 2 May 2026, launched the Cell Broadcast Alert System for instant disaster alerting services for its citizens. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has successfully operationalised Integrated Alert System (SACHET), developed by the Centre of Development of Telematics (C-DOT).
What is it?
The Cell Broadcast System using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerting services for its citizens. It delivers geo-targeted, multilingual disaster alerts via SMS (earthquakes, tsunamis, floods) to mobile users in the country.

- The Cell Broadcast Alert System has been developed by the Department of Telecommunications in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority using cell broadcast technology.

2. OPEC+
Why in news? The United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 29 April 2026, announced its exit from OPEC and OPEC+ effective 1 May 2026. The decision comes amid the US-Israel war. the UAE is leaving OPEC to meet its national interests and free itself from the obligations to meet oil production demands under the OPEC agreement. The UAE has ambitious goals of achieving 5 million barrels of oil per day capacity by 2027, and the country seeks more freedom to pursue that goal.
What is it?
OPEC stands for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It is a permanent intergovernmental organization founded in 1960 to coordinate the petroleum policies of its member countries.

3. FTA
Why in news? India and New Zealand, on 27 April 2026, signed a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), securing 100 per cent duty-free access for Indian exports to New Zealand. Meanwhile, India will reduce or eliminate tariffs on 95 per cent of imports from New Zealand. The FTA will lower tariffs on key products such as kiwifruit, apples, textiles, apparel, leather, pharmaceuticals, engineering products, gems and jewellery, and ceramics.

4. Nilgiris
Why in news? A massive wildfire in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district has been intensifying for over 10 days, scorching areas like the Parsons Valley, Wenlock Downs, Pykara, adjoining zones like Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Coimbatore and Erode. The blaze, which began around 15 April 2026, has intensified due to high-speed winds, severe heat, and dry, high-altitude terrain, necessitating Indian Air Force support.
What is it?
The Nilgiris, or "Blue Mountains", are a mountain range in the Western Ghats at the tri-junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.

Why in news? France, in April 2026, launched a roadmap to fully exit fossil fuels by 2050. It has become one of the first countries to set clear deadlines for phasing out fossil fuels. Key targets include ending coal usage by 2030, oil by 2045, and natural gas by 2050. Under the roadmap, France has also reaffirmed its target of reducing greenhouse emissions by 5 per cent annually between 2024 and 2028, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
