First-ever Khelo India Tribal Games will be held in Chhattisgarh

Khelo Indian Tribal Games:  Union Ministry of  Youth Affairs and Sports announced the First-ever edition of Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) to promote mass participation and sporting excellence from the tribal areas. KITG will be held between March 25 and April 6 in three cities in Chhattisgarh – Raipur, Jagdalpur and Sarguja.

Chhattisgarh becoming the first state to host this landmark national event, dedicated exclusively to tribal athletes, marks a significant milestone in India’s sporting journey aimed at tribal empowerment and grassroots inclusion. 

Khelo Indian Tribal Games 2026: Key Highlights

• Khelo India Tribal Games will be held between March 25 and April 6 in three cities in Chhattisgarh – Raipur, Jagdalpur and Sarguja.

• Theme: Tribal Pride, Sporting Glory" (Janajatiya Garv, Khel Samman).

• Mascot: ‘Morveer’, Derived from two powerful words — ‘Mor’, meaning mine or our own in Chhattisgarhi, and ‘Veer’, symbolising courage and valour — Morveer represents the spirit, pride and identity of India’s tribal communities.

• Seven medal sports – athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming and wrestling. 

• Two demonstration sports – mallakhamb and kabaddi. 

• KITG will see representation from most states and Union Territories of India.

Significance and Objectives

The Khelo India Tribal Games represent a strategic move by the Government of India to integrate tribal regions into the national sports framework.

• Talent Identification: By hosting games in tribal hubs like Jagdalpur and Sarguja, the ministry aims to identify "diamonds in the rough" at an early age.

• Financial Support: Top-performing athletes at KITG are eligible for the Khelo India Scholarship, which provides ₹5 lakh per annum for 8 years to cover training, diet, and equipment.

• Infrastructure Growth: The event has prompted the development of state-of-the-art sporting facilities in Chhattisgarh, which will serve as a lasting legacy for local athletes.

• National Inclusion: With participation expected from most States and Union Territories, the games serve as a platform for cultural exchange and national unity under the Viksit Bharat vision.

The inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 marks a transformative chapter in India’s sporting history, shifting the spotlight to the extraordinary talent hidden within our tribal heartlands by blending traditional heritage with modern competitive standards, the event provides a national stage for athletes from Raipur to Jagdalpur to chase their dreams.
