Tamil Nadu Minister for School Education, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, stated on May 1, 2025, that a decision to postpone the reopening of schools in the state would be taken closer to the reopening date, based on weather conditions and in collaboration with the Chief Minister.
Speaking to the media after paying respect to former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's statue at TVS Tollgate in Tiruchi on Labour Day, Mr. Poyyamozhi said: "The summer heat is sweltering in Tamil Nadu, and Tiruchi registered 104 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday. Schools were set to return on June 2, however, we will make a decision based on weather circumstances."
He also said, "If the heatwave intensifies this year, we will act on the instructions of the Climate Management Committee in the best interest of students."
Early Monsoon Prediction
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an early arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala on May 27. Typically, it arrives over Kerala around June 1, which is the official start date for the Indian monsoon season.
However, it is arriving early. Tamil Nadu, which is close to Kerala and located on the southeastern coast, normally receives the southwest monsoon rains shortly after they begin in Kerala.
The first stretch of monsoon showers in Tamil Nadu, notably along the coast, including Chennai. This early monsoon makes a heatwave-induced holiday prolongation appear unlikely. However, the prospect of significant rainfall resulting in government-issued holidays persists. A formal statement regarding school reopening is expected before the end of May.
