CBSE 12th Result 2026: Teachers Raise Concerns Over On-Screen Marking Format, Ask for Offline Checking

The Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE has initiated the marking of the answer sheets for the ongoing Class 10, 12 Board Examinations. The board has introduced on-screen marking or OSM for the CBSE 12th Result 2026 computation. As per the new format, the teachers are required to evaluate the answer sheets on the designated portals. The process, however, has drawn sharp criticism from teachers who are now asking for a return to the old offline model of marking and evaluation. 

Teachers have raised concerns regarding increased fatigue, low speed of checking and even illegible digital copies of the answer sheets. Speaking to Jagran Josh, teachers pointed out that the new method has reduced the time allotted to check the answer sheets as well. 

Ms Sarla (name changed) pointed out that the infrastructure for OSM is not adequate. She also pointed out that teachers are concerned about the visibility of the answers on the screen due to blotting on the other side. “Mas mock exercises were conducted, and teachers have been asked to go to the centres, as was the norm. However, not all schools have the latest machines. Watching on screen at the crucial juncture is something not every teacher is comfortable with.”

Another teacher also voiced concerns over how it may adversely impact the results for students, as some answers may not be legible due to blotting. “Exams that use OSM usually request a black ballpoint pen. This is most suitable for the assessment of scanned answer sheets. However, no such precautions were taken by the board. This leaves a larger possibility of incorrect marking. Now that evaluation of answer sheets has officially begun, teachers are worried about the overall result.”

Teachers and experts have highlighted that OSM could lead to a slight dip in the overall result of Class 12 students this year. While it is still early days, teachers are continuing to voice their concerns and request a rollback of the policy. 

Experts privy to the evaluation process and timelines, however, have pointed out that a rollback is not going to be easy at this stage. “Traditionally, answer sheets were first sent to the regional centres, tagged and then sent out for checking to the various nodal centres. This year, however, the answer sheets were not sent. Rolling back may become a logistical delay and increase confusion.”

Some have also labelled these as teething problems. “OSM works better. Technology is changing, and it is important that we also change with it. Education must find more transparency and standardisation, and on-screen marking is designed to achieve just that,” says Dr Bhatnagar, senior educationist and ex. Principal of KV.
