Assam Govt Rolls Out Rs 194.55 Cr Scholarship for 1.66 Lakh Tribal Students
Assam announces Rs 194.55 cr National Post-Matric Scholarship for 1,66,124 tribal students; fund to be directly transferred to Aadhaar-linked accounts; scheme also covers homestay assistance for ST entrepreneurs
The Assam government has announced scholarship assistance worth Rs 194.55 crore for 1,66,124 Scheduled Tribe (ST) students pursuing higher education.
The announcement was made under the National Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe students for academic years 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26.
Organised by Tribal Affairs Dept
The programme was organised by the Tribal Affairs (Plain) Department at the GMCH Auditorium in Guwahati.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, who also holds the portfolios of Higher Education, Tribal Affairs (Plain) and Information Technology, attended the programme as the chief guest.
The event was also attended by Tribal Affairs (Plain) Department Commissioner and Secretary Binita Pegu, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent Dr Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, departmental officials, beneficiaries and media representatives.

Direct Benefit Transfer and Digital Literacy Push
The scholarship amount will be transferred directly to beneficiaries' Aadhaar-linked bank accounts, ensuring transparent and contactless disbursement.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Ranoj Pegu highlighted the importance of digital awareness and digital literacy in today's technology-driven environment. He urged students to acquire digital knowledge and use technology responsibly and constructively for their educational development.
The minister also emphasised the significance of higher education for tribal youth and encouraged beneficiaries to utilise the scholarship judiciously and remain dedicated to their academic pursuits.
Homestay Assistance for ST Entrepreneurs
As part of the same programme, Pegu also distributed financial assistance for upgrading homestays for Scheduled Tribe entrepreneurs under the Tribal Affairs (Plain) Department.
The minister disbursed financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to four ST entrepreneurs. The report states that the support is intended to create livelihood opportunities and contribute to socio-economic development of tribal communities.
The programme, reflects the government's focus on combining educational assistance with entrepreneurship support for tribal communities.
