On March 24, 2026, the 8th annual World Air Quality Report was released by IQAir Global CEO Frank Hammes drawing the data from over 9,446 cities in 143 countries of air which we breathe.The report reveals that 91% of nations are currently exceeding the WHO annual PM2.5 guideline of 5 µg/m³.

World Air Quality Report 2025: Key Highlights

Climate change-driven wildfires in North America and Europe, combined with industrial emissions in South Asia, have made 2025 one of the most challenging years for global air quality. South Asia remains the most polluted region globally. 

World Air Quality Report 2025, indicated that India is the 6th Most Polluted Country  in the World. The report also highlights India has shown slight improvement of 3% decline in National pollution levels from its 3rd place rank in 2023 and 5th in 2024, the numbers remain hazardous.

India’s average PM2.5 concentration stood at 48.9 48.9 µg/m³ in 2025 which is nearly 10 times higher than the World Health Organisation (WHO) limit and the concentration of toxic particles in the Indo-Gangetic plain remains the same.

All top 10 cities are located in South Asia or China, primarily due to industrial emissions and stagnant winter air. 

The 2025 report highlights a significant shift with Loni, India taking the top spot from previous leaders. Delhi Remains the Most Polluted Capital city for the 8th time.

Top Cleanest Countries in the World

In 2026, only 13 countries and territories out of 143 monitored met the WHO annual guideline of 5 mu g/m3. These nations are mostly island territories or countries with high environmental regulations.

According to IQAir Global CEO Frank Hammes, The 2026 report identifies three primary Reasons: 

  • Wildfires: Record-breaking wildfires in Canada, Australia and Europe released 1,380 megatons of carbon, affecting air quality thousands of miles away.

  • Fossil Fuels: A lack of strict enforcement on coal-fired power plants and vehicular emissions remains the biggest hurdle in South Asia.

  • Monitoring Gaps: While data coverage is expanding especially in Africa many of the most polluted regions still lack the real-time monitoring needed to protect public health.

The World Air Quality Report highlights that 75 countries in the world saw a decline in pollution but 91% of the world still breathes air that exceeds WHO safety limits. India's Loni is the new epicenter of air pollution while Delhi remains the world's most polluted capital city for the 8th time.
