Who is the Owner of Britannia?

If Parle-G belongs to childhood memories, Britannia belongs to the breakfast table. From Good Day biscuits to Marie Gold, from Tiger to NutriChoice — Britannia has been a quiet constant in Indian homes for over a century. But who actually owns Britannia today, and how did this brand grow into a Rs. 16,000+ crore empire?

Who is the Owner of Britannia?

Britannia Industries is owned and led by the Wadia family, one of India's oldest and most powerful business dynasties. The controlling interest in Britannia lies with Nusli Wadia, the chairman of the Wadia Group, through his holding company Associated Biscuits International Holdings (ABIH). Today, the company is actively run by Varun Berry as Managing Director and Rajneet Kohli as CEO, but the Wadia family remains the dominant shareholder and strategic force behind the brand.

A Brief History of Britannia

The story of Britannia begins not in a boardroom but in a small shop in Calcutta.

In 1892, Britannia was founded with a seed capital of just Rs. 295 in a small house in Calcutta. The company began baking biscuits and quickly found a market among British officers and the urban Indian middle class.

By 1918, a Calcutta businessman named C.H. Holmes established Britannia Biscuit Company Limited in partnership with British interests. The brand grew steadily through the early 20th century, riding the expansion of railways and urban trade.

In 1954, Britannia Biscuit Company was formally incorporated. Through the 1970s, the Wadia Group — led by Nusli Wadia — began accumulating a significant stake in the company. By the early 1990s, the Wadias had cemented their position as the controlling shareholders, and the company was renamed Britannia Industries Limited.

Who Are the Wadias?

The Wadia family is one of the most storied business families in India. Their legacy traces back to the 18th century when Lovji Nusserwanjee Wadia built ships for the British East India Company. The family later diversified into textiles (Bombay Dyeing), real estate, aviation (GoAir), and of course, food through Britannia.

Nusli Wadia, born in 1944, is the current patriarch of the Wadia Group. He is known as much for his sharp business instincts as for his fierce independence; he was one of the few Indian industrialists to publicly stand up to the Dhirubhai Ambani empire in the 1980s in what became one of corporate India's most dramatic proxy battles.

His two sons, Ness Wadia and Jehangir (Jeh) Wadia, are also on the Britannia board, indicating the family's intention to retain generational control over the company.

Britannia vs. Parle: India's Greatest Biscuit Rivalry

Nothing about Britannia is complete without mentioning its greatest rival which is Parle Products. The two brands have competed for dominance in India's biscuit market for decades.

While Parle-G remains the world's largest-selling biscuit by volume (driven largely by its price point), Britannia leads in value market share and has a far wider premium product portfolio. In recent years, as Indian consumers have moved toward healthier and more premium snacking, Britannia's NutriChoice and Good Day ranges have outpaced Parle in urban markets.

Britannia's ownership story is not like Parle's as there was no three-way family split, no three separate companies sharing the same name. Instead, it is the story of one family, the Wadias, who saw the value in a 130-year-old brand, fought off a global multinational to keep it, and turned it into one of India's most valuable FMCG empires.
