Why is India So Good at Growing Mint?

Mint is very well adapted to the climate of India in particular to the conditions prevailing in the northern plains. It is a popular crop among farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar because it falls accurately in between potato and paddy seasons.

After the harvest is dried, essential oil is extracted in steam distillation units fabricated locally by farmers or farmer groups. Farmers sell this mentha oil to aggregators in the village who further sell it to big traders, exporters and small scale industries.

The World Resources Institute mentions: “Once the harvest is dried, its essential oil is extracted in locally fabricated steam distillation units owned and operated by individual farmers or farmer collectives. Farmers sell this mentha oil to aggregators in the village who further sell it to traders, exporters and small-scale and medium industries.”

Mint oil is used in many products such as pain relief medicines, cough syrups, mouth fresheners, toothpaste, and chocolates.

Within India people use mint in its daily cooking such as pudina chutney, as well as in tea and in the preparation of various traditional medicines. It's one of such crops that is rooted into Indian culture plus the international economy.
