Johannes Gutenberg created the first mechanical printing press in Mainz, Germany, around 1440 using both movable type and a printing press so that books could be printed quickly and easily.

Previously, books would have been made by hand, meaning they were extremely costly to obtain and therefore rare. The printing press changed how people communicated, learned, and spread information throughout Europe and eventually around the world.
