When we refer to the "City of Apparel" of India, the city that is known by this name is Noida. Noida, in the state of Uttar Pradesh along Delhi, has evolved as a prominent hub for the garment and apparel sector in India.
Why is Noida the City of Apparel?
Noida also houses numerous garment factories and exporters. There are approximately 1,500 apparel units operating in Noida that manufacture ready-to-wear apparel for domestic and overseas markets. Due to such an immense concentration of apparel companies, Noida earned the title of "City of Apparel."
To facilitate and develop this sector even more, the government of Uttar Pradesh is working on a special region named Apparel City or Apparel Park in Gautam Budh Nagar district of Noida. This park covers an area of around 150-175 acres and aims to consolidate garment factories and exporters in one location with all the facilities.
What is Apparel City?
- Apparel City is a garment manufacturing industrial park of large scale. It will:
- Make land and facilities available for garment manufacturing units
- Generate tens of thousands of employment opportunities (approximately 3 to 5 lakh individuals)
- Attract investments of thousands of crores of rupees (approximately Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 crore)
- Enhance export of ready-made garments from the area
- Several garment firms have already acquired plots in Apparel City and are constructing factories there. Apparel Park also intends to impart training to villagers near the location so that they can work in the garment sector and earn a living.
Significance of Noida to the Apparel Sector
- The garment industry of Noida is significant because:
- It is making a major contribution to India's apparel and textile exports.
- It gives employment to a significant number of individuals, primarily females (approximately 70% of the jobs at the park will be given to females).
- It aids the development of the economy in Uttar Pradesh and the surrounding regions.

Although Noida is referred to as the City of Apparel, India boasts numerous other cities renowned for textiles and fabrics:
- Karur, Tamil Nadu: Famous for home textiles and referred to as the Textile Capital of Tamil Nadu.
- Surat, Gujarat: Referred to as the Synthetic Capital of India due to its man-made fabrics.
- Pochampally, Telangana: Renowned for silk and handloom items.
- Kota, Rajasthan: Famous for Kota Doria fabric.
- Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh: Renowned for silk and cotton fabrics.
- Mumbai, Maharashtra: A key hub for the cotton textile industry.
