The famous Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a very special geographically intact practice that happens around the world. It is a seasonal timekeeping practice that is followed in several countries, including the United States of America.

It is basically changing the clocks and the time to increase productivity and use daylight better. This practice happens when the evening months arrive. In very new age language, it is a clock and time makeover.

But are you not curious about what is behind this system and why does the US still change its time twice a year? Are they planning to make it a permanent practice?

Let’s learn about Daylight Saving Time, its history, permanent DST and the upcoming clock changes.

What Is Daylight Saving Time?

The Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a practice where people move their clock one hour forward. This is done when the weather shifts and the warmer months arrive. It is done so that the daylight lasts longer in the evenings.

When the DST ends, people move back their clock one hour, and return to the standard time as it is around the world.

In the United States of America, DST begins in March, and ends in November. Everyone calls it ‘spring forward, fall back.’ The term is used for the clock changes.

As an exception, DST is not followed everywhere around the world. Even in the US, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not take part in this practice and stay in the standard time throughout the year.

Why do we not use it in India? We Indians do not use DST just because seasonal changes in the daylight hours are relatively minor only.

What Is Permanent Daylight Saving Time?

This is something new that may be implemented in countries that set clocks according to DST. A permanent daylight saving time will mean that the countries will keep the clock according to DST throughout the year. If it is implemented, they will not be switching their clocks between DST and standard time twice annually.

In this system, the clock will remain one hour ahead of the standard time, no matter if it is winter or summer. This will make the evenings more sunny, and mornings will have a little more time to rise.

In the US, this idea of daylight saving time has literally become a legislative debate. The Sunshine Protection Act has been proposed to end the twice yearly clock changes and make DST permanent.

Now, if there is a rule, there will always be a group that opposes it and one that supports it. Supporters pointed out longer evenings and daylight, while the people who are critical about it raised a few major concerns. These concerns are about darker winter mornings, sleep schedules, energy use, and effects on industries and communities.

As this debate might end soon, the clock will have a permanent routine to follow in these countries.
