What is the Origin of Valentine’s Day?

Valentine's Day has strong roots in Lupercalia, a Roman festival that took place in February. The festival was a pre-Christian event that focused on the purification of people or the area on the occasion of the renewing of the seasons.

According to history, Roman priests like the Luperci would perform religious ceremonies in order to promote good health and to guarantee that the crops would grow well during the year. As Christianity spread throughout the Roman Empire, Church leaders replaced or changed some of the pagan celebrations of the Roman calendar.

 It is believed that Pope Gelasius I established the feast day of St. Valentine on February 14 in the 5th century, and thus St. Valentine's Day eventually became a Christian holiday rather than a continuation of a pagan holiday.

Who was Saint Valentine?

Saint Valentine is the name of several early Christian martyrs whose feast is celebrated on February 14. 

There are historical records indicating that two different Saints named Valentine lived in the third century AD during the period of the Roman Empire. 

One was a priest in Rome, and the other was a bishop in Terni, both were said to have been executed during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. 

Much of what we know about these men comes from later tradition and not from contemporary sources.Because of this, it is logical to assume that various accounts of both of these Saints have become intertwined over time. 

The Roman Catholic Church has declared that both Saints were martyrs, and they were included within the liturgical calendar of Saints created by the Roman Catholic Church during the early centuries after Christ.
