U.S. Reliance Refinery Deal

The global industry of energy is evolving very rapidly and countries are searching for different ways so that they can secure fuel supplies, strengthen their economies and reduce their dependence on imports.

That is why oil refineries play a significant role in this system as they are capable of converting crude oil into useful by-products such as petrol, kerosene, diesel, jet fuel and major other petroleum products.

For decades, the United States has been one of the largest producers and consumers of oil.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration website, the country produces about 21.91 million barrels per day as per 2023 data.

However, when it comes to building new refineries, the U.S. has been holding back due to the high costs, strict regulations and the policies of energy that are constantly changing.

Recently a major shift has brought in global attention to the U.S. energy sector. The United States will soon witness the construction of its new large oil refinery after 50 years.

This project is connecting two major economies as the investment is hailing from one of India’s  biggest businesses.

Here are the details of the refinery project, the role of India’s Reliance Industries, and also explore the top oil refineries in India.

Trump Announces First U.S. Oil Refinery in 50 Years

Donald Trump recently announced that the United States plans to build a new oil refinery with investment support from Reliance Industries.

On his Truth Social account Donald Trump mentions: “America is returning to REAL ENERGY DOMINANCE! Today I am proud to announce that America First Refining is opening the FIRST new U.S. Oil Refinery in 50 YEARS in Brownsville, Texas. THIS IS A HISTORIC $300 BILLION DOLLAR DEAL — THE BIGGEST IN U.S. HISTORY, A MASSIVE WIN for American Workers, Energy, and the GREAT People of South Texas! Thank you to our partners in India, and their largest privately held Energy Company, Reliance, for this tremendous Investment. It is because of our America First Agenda, streamlining Permits, and lowering Taxes, that have attracted Billions of Dollars in Deals coming back to our Nation. A new Refinery at the Port of Brownsville, will fuel U.S. Markets, strengthen our National Security, boost American Energy production, deliver Billions of Dollars in Economic impact, and will be THE CLEANEST REFINERY IN THE WORLD. It will power Global Exports, and bring THOUSANDS of long overdue Jobs and Growth to a Region that deserves it. This is what AMERICAN ENERGY DOMINANCE looks like. AMERICA FIRST, ALWAYS!”

The refinery will be built at the Port of Brownsville in Texas which is near the U.S. and Mexico border.

Trump has described the project as a “historic $300 billion deal” and said it could strengthen U.S. energy production, boost economic growth, and create thousands of jobs.

What Role Will Reliance Industries Play in the Project?

Mukesh Ambani is the owner of Reliance Industries, which is India’s largest private sector company and one of the world’s biggest energy companies.

The Nesfircroft mentions: “Did you know it holds the title of the world's largest refinery? First commissioned in July 1999, it is a private-sector crude oil refinery owned by Indian multinational conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited . It has a processing capacity of 1.24 million barrels of oil per day.”

The company has extensive experience in refining and petrochemicals. It operates the Jamnagar Refinery in Gujarat, which is the largest refining hub in the world.

Trump specifically thanked Reliance Industries for supporting the project and described the investment as a major step toward strengthening U.S. energy production.

Why Haven’t Many Refineries Been Built in the U.S. Recently?

Although the U.S. has many refineries, building new ones has been rare in recent decades.

Some key reasons include:

  • High construction costs

  • Environmental regulations

  • Changing energy policies

  • Shift toward renewable energy

Because of these factors, most companies have preferred expanding existing refineries instead of building entirely new ones.

List of India’s Top 5 Oil Refineries
