Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE 10th Result 2026 will be declared in the month of April. This year, with two board examinations, CBSE will be releasing the Class 10 results in the month of April itself. As per the official notification, CBSE 10th Result 2026 for February examinations will be released on or before April 20, 2026.
The board has specified the Class 10 result date as well as the tentative date sheet for May examinations. The final date sheet for CBSE Class 10 May Exams 2026 is expected to be released along with the results. As of now, April 20 is the date but the board may release the results earlier for logistical ease of submission of LOCs.
Once the results are declared, CBSE will then open the portal for submission of LOC (list of candidates) for the second Class 10 Board examinations, tentatively scheduled to begin from May 2, 2026. The results are being expedited to help students take an informed choice whether to appear for the second chance offered by the board from this year. However, many parents and students are still confused regarding the same.
Let us explore as to what CBSE 2nd Board Exam is, its broad guidelines and weather or not students should appear for the second board.
CBSE Class 10 May (2nd Board) Exams – Broad Guidelines
From the academic year 2025-26, CBSE in accordance with National Education Policy, NEP has started with two board system for Class 10 students. In this scheme, students will be able to appear for their Class 10 board examinations twice – once in February and again in May.
The purpose of May examinations is to give the students
- An opportunity to improve their scores
- Get an additional chance (other from the compartment exams which will be conducted as per schedule in July) to pass or clear compartment examinations
The idea behind the two exams is to help students and relieve the stress associated with board examinations. Increasing the possible attempts gives the students the added opportunity to perform better and be at ease at the same time.
CBSE Two Board Exams – Who Can Appear
CBSE has made the February Examinations as the mandatory examination. In effect, only the students who have appeared for the CBSE Class 10 Board Exams conducted in February – March 2026 are eligible to appear.
Also, students can only appear for the subject they have appeared for the February examination. This is also applicable even if the student had taken an additional subject but chose not to appear for it or was absent in one of the subjects opted for.
Furthermore, CBSE has not clarified if students may be allowed to opt for an easier version. For example, a student who appeared for Class 10 Standard Mathematics may not be allowed to now appear for Class 10 Basic Examination. No special instructions have been provided in regards this. As per the guidelines, at present the students are not allowed.
Another important point is that students can appear for only a maximum of 3 subjects. The combination of these three subjects is as follows:
- All the three main subjects – Mathematics, Science and Social Science, or
- Two of the three main subjects + 1 Language
Note, students cannot appear for two languages (barring the situation where student has failed in both of the languages he/she appeared for in the February examination.)
Detailed tables of different subject combinations allowed in May Exams are provided at the end of the article.
CBSE 10th Board May Exams 2026: Should You Appear
For the students who fail or have a compartment in a subject, the answer is already given. May exams is a good opportunity for all such students to save their year. While they would still be eligible to appear for the Compartment examinations, May Exams is more of less necessary for them.
As for the students who have cleared all the subjects, May exams must be seen as an opportunity to improve their score. A student can take this route if he/she believes that they could have scored better than the marks they achieve in February results.
Parents and students are advised to assess their results carefully when it is released and discuss with the teachers before making the decision.
Important to remember, the schools will get a week to update and upload the List of Candidates or LOC for May Examination. Only students who confirm their willingness to appear for second board examination will be eligible to appear for the May examination. For this, they would need to ensure that their name is listed in the LOC submitted after the CBSE 10th Results 2026 for Feb Exams is released.
Also, parents will be required to pay the examination fee again for the May examination. It is hence important to make an informed decision on whether or not to appear for the board examination.
Please remember, in case a student appears for both the exams for a subject – CBSE will only consider the higher of the two to prepare the final mark sheet. For example, a student appears for CBSE 10th Maths exam in February and May and in scores say 40 in February and 39 in May, CBSE will automatically consider 40 marks for his final result.
CBSE Class 10 Two Board Examination – Subject Combination and Eligibility for 2nd Board Examination
The subject combination a student can choose for the second board exam will depend on the student’s choices in the first board examination – how many subjects the student appeared for in the first exam. At a minimum level, CBSE requires a student to appear for 5 subjects – 2 languages and 3 electives (like main subjects namely Mathematics, Social Studies and Science). However, students also have an option of choosing additional subjects.
