There is a crop which has been nourishing India thousands of years before rice was crowned king, and wheat became staple of every household. The crop is Jowar and its scientific name is Sorghum bicolor. And one state in India has a greater production of Jowar in comparison to any other state.
Jowar is not flashy and does not make headlines like paddy or wheat. However, it nourishes the whole region, provides livestock to large dry belts, and has gained a health-conscious reputation in urban kitchens as a gluten-free superfood.
Which State is the Largest Producer of Jowar in India?
The answer is clear and consistent across years of official data which is Maharashtra.
The Government of India has issued the Second Advance Estimates 2024-25 which estimates the jowar production in India to be 52.65 lakh tonnes in comparison to 47.37 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. Maharashtra is the largest producer of Jowar with 18.56 lakh tonnes followed by Karnataka with 8.55 lakh tonnes, Gujarat with 6.19 lakh tonnes and Rajasthan with 4.87 lakh tonnes. During the financial year 2024, Maharashtra had the highest jowar (sorghum) production volume in India, of approximately 1.4 million metric tonnes. The states of Karnataka and Rajasthan came behind it.
Top 5 Jowar-Producing States
Here is the list as per Grounded Foods website:
| Rank | State | Production (2024-25) | |
| 1 | Maharashtra | 18.56 lakh tonnes | |
| 2 | Karnataka | 8.55 lakh tonnes | |
| 3 | Gujarat | 6.19 lakh tonnes | |
| 4 | Rajasthan | 4.87 lakh tonnes | |
| 5 | Uttar Pradesh | 4 lakh tonnes |
The fact that Maharashtra tops the jowar map of India is a result of geography, seasons, soil, culture and decades of agricultural practice. It is the crop made on the semi-arid plains of Marathwada and Vidarbha--and this crop, in its turn, has kept these areas alive through the ages. With the increasing demand of the millets both within the country and internationally, the dominance of Maharashtra in the production of jowar will probably only be enhanced in the future.
