1. The Trophy’s Official Name isn’t Oscar

We all know that iconic golden statue as the Oscars, but this isn’t its official name. The official name of the award is the Academy Award of Merit. Margaret Harrick, a librarian and later the executive director of the Academy was the one who suggested that the statue resembles her uncle Oscar, the name became so popular that the award came to be known as Oscars.  

2. The Record of Seven Decades of Consecutive Nominations

Composer John Williams holds the record for being a nominee in seven consecutive decades, he is known for work in Star Trek series with his nominations spanning from 1968 till 2024. He has received 54 nominations, the record for most nominations by any living individual in Oscar history.

3. The Trophy Couldn’t be Sold

The Oscars Trophy couldn’t be sold. It is done to maintain its uniqueness, to keep it priceless so that it cannot be turned into a tradeable object in an auction. Since 1951, the winners and their heirs have the option to offer the Golden Statue back to the Academy for $1 if they want to sell it.

4. The Longest Speech in Oscars

Adrian Brody holds the record for the longest award acceptance speech in Oscars, he achieved the feat in 2025, when he gave a speech for 5 minutes 40 seconds.

5. The Speech Limit

The time limit for award acceptance speech in Oscars is 45 seconds. It was set after Greer Garson, in her acceptance speech delivered a speech lasting 5 minute and 30 seconds.

6. Only 12 Categories in First Oscars

When the first Oscars started in 1929, there were 12 categories that were recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

7. Dolby Theatre became a permanent place for Oscars

Ben-Hur in 1959, Titanic in 1997, and The Lord of the Rings in 2003, hold the record for most number of Oscars won by a movie. All these films won 11 Oscars each.
