Early Life and Academic Background
Himanta Biswa Sarma was born to Kailash Nath Sarma and Mrinalini Devi in Jorhat, Assam. His father was a popular poet and novelist. Sarma was born in Guwahati and was educated in Kamrup Academy Higher Secondary School.
He has an outstanding academic career. He enrolled in higher education at Cotton College (now Cotton University), in Guwahati. While at college, he was elected the General Secretary of the students' union three times. In 1990, Sarma graduated with Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and in 1992, he graduated with Master of Arts in Political Science.
In 1995, he received a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the Government Law College in Guwahati. He served as a lawyer in the Gauhati High Court where he worked a total of 5 years. He earned his Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Political Science in 2006, from Gauhati University.
Political Career: From Congress to BJP
Sarma started his active political career with the Indian National Congress. His first challenge was in the 2001 elections in the Assam Legislative Assembly. He overcame the experienced leader Bhrigu Kumar Phukan at the Jalukbari seat. He has served this constituency five terms in a row. Since 2001, Sarma has won all the elections at Jalukbari.
During his tenure with Congress, he was in charge of some of the most significant portfolios. These were Health, Education and Finance under the former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. He is said to have laid the foundation of a number of medical colleges in Assam. Nevertheless, using internal differences within the party, he stepped down from the Congress in 2015.
On August 23, 2015, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party. He was instrumental in BJP’s first ever win at the Assam Assembly elections in 2016. The party then appointed him as the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA). The purpose of this alliance is to coordinate the between BJP and its regional allies in the Northeast.
Tenure as Chief Minister and Achievements
Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister of Assam on May 10, 2021. He replaced Sarbananda Sonowal. The infrastructure, healthcare, and administrative efficiency are the primary focus of the government under his administration.
As the Health Minister and subsequently as CM, he spearheaded the response of the state during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sarma is also the President of Badminton Association of India.

The total liabilities of the family are approximately Rs 16.86 crore. He has no criminal cases registered against him.
