Axiom Space is a private space company that is working to build the world’s first commercial space station. As part of its mission, Axiom has partnered with NASA and other international space agencies to send private astronaut missions to the International Space Station (ISS). These missions are known as Axiom Missions, or Ax Missions, and they play a key role in the company’s goal to make space more accessible for both scientific research and commercial purposes.
Since its first launch in 2022, Axiom has successfully sent astronauts, including former NASA astronauts, international crew members, and private citizens, to space aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft. Each mission includes a carefully selected team that undergoes rigorous training to live and work in microgravity aboard the ISS.
These missions not only help advance space tourism and commercial space travel but also contribute to important scientific experiments, international cooperation, and technology development for future space exploration.
Here is a complete list of all Axiom Missions carried out till 2025 with important details such as the launch dates, mission durations, astronauts on board, and space agency partners involved in each mission.
List of Axiom Missions
The first Axiom mission was conducted in 2022 when 4 astronauts went to study space and conducted 25 experiments. Here is a detailed overview of all the missions till 2025.

Axiom Mission 1
Axiom Mission 1 (Ax-1), launched by Axiom Space, was the first fully private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS). This historic mission marked a major step toward building Axiom Station, which aims to be the world’s first commercial space station. The four-member international crew spent 17 days in space, living and working aboard the ISS.
Axiom partnered with SpaceX, which provided transportation for the crew using its Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket.
As the first mission of its kind, Ax-1 set the foundation for future private missions to the ISS and paved the way for a new era of commercial space travel. The Ax-1 astronauts were also the first private crew to undergo NASA’s full training program, completing between 700 and 1,000 hours of preparation. Their training covered areas like safety procedures, health protocols, ISS systems, launch site operations, and experiments.
Science and research were central to this mission. The crew conducted more than 25 experiments in collaboration with top research institutions, focusing on health, technology, and space science. These efforts gave new opportunities to scientists around the world to test ideas in space.
The Ax-1 crew represented four different countries and conducted outreach in five languages, helping to engage and inspire global audiences and make space more accessible to people from all backgrounds.
Axiom Mission 2
Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2) was the second all-private astronaut mission by Axiom Space to the International Space Station (ISS). It was another important step toward building Axiom Station, which is planned to be the first commercial space station and future replacement for the ISS.
The Ax-2 mission launched on May 21, 2023. The four-member crew traveled to space aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, launched by a Falcon 9 rocket. During their time on the ISS, they lived and worked on the station, carrying out various science experiments, outreach events, and commercial activities.
The mission was led by Peggy Whitson, Axiom Space’s Director of Human Spaceflight and a former NASA astronaut. John Shoffner, an aviator from Knoxville, Tennessee, served as the pilot. The two mission specialists were Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Ax-2 played a key role in supporting Axiom’s goal of building a long-term human presence in low-Earth orbit and preparing for future missions deeper into space.
Axiom Mission 3
Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3) was Axiom Space’s third commercial human spaceflight mission and the first all-European commercial astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The four-member crew included:
Michael López-Alegría (Commander), a dual citizen of the United States and Spain and a former NASA astronaut. He also led Axiom Mission 1, the first all-private astronaut mission to the ISS.
-
Walter Villadei (Pilot), a Colonel in the Italian Air Force, representing Italy.
-
Alper Gezeravcı (Mission Specialist), the first astronaut from Türkiye.
-
Marcus Wandt (Mission Specialist), a European Space Agency (ESA) project astronaut representing Sweden.
This mission was notable for being the first commercial flight to include a national astronaut sponsored by the ESA, with Marcus Wandt serving in that role. All three crew members which are Villadei, Gezeravcı, and Wandt are from military backgrounds and carry extensive flight training from their countries' air forces, making them highly skilled and experienced for space operations.
Ax-3 demonstrated Axiom Space’s growing international partnerships and continued progress in advancing commercial space travel for global participants.
Axiom Mission 4
Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) features a diverse international crew from India, Poland, and Hungary, marking a historic first for each country’s presence on the International Space Station (ISS). This mission also represents the second government-backed human spaceflight from each nation in over four decades.
-
Shubhanshu Shukla will become India’s second national astronaut to travel to space, following the country’s first spaceflight in 1984.
-
Sławosz Uznański, an ESA project astronaut, will be the second astronaut from Poland since 1978.
-
Tibor Kapu will be Hungary’s second national astronaut to fly to space since 1980.
The mission will be led by Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut, who will be commanding her second commercial spaceflight. She already holds the record for the longest total time spent in space by an American astronaut. Ax-4 is the second commercial mission to feature a crew made up of government- and ESA-sponsored astronauts. It symbolizes a major step forward for the national space programs of India, Poland, and Hungary, offering them new opportunities in human space exploration.
