Indian classical dances are a tapestry of history, mythology, and spiritual expression. While most forms like Kathak or Odissi are performed by all genders, one specific dance has historically been reserved for women.

Which Classical Dance of India is Performed Only by Women?

Mohiniyattam is the only Indian classical dance traditionally performed exclusively by women. It is also known as the "Dance of the Enchantress," . It originated in Kerala and is defined by the Lasya style, which emphasizes extreme feminine grace, fluid movements, and subtle expressions although modern times it has also been performed by all genders, it remains the quintessential female solo dance of India.

Mohiniyattam is one of the eight classical dances recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The term Mohiniyattam literally translates into Mohini and Aattam;

  • Mohini: A woman who enchants onlookers.
  • Aattam is a graceful and rhythmic body movement.

Mohiniyattam is characterized by gentle, swaying movements of the torso, reminiscent of the palm trees of Kerala or the undulating waves of the Arabian Sea unlike the high-energy leaps of Kathakali. It was considered as a Female-Only Classical Dance.

The Mythological Origins

Mohiniyattam is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu took the form of the enchantress "Mohini" twice: Amrita Manthan: To lure the Asuras (demons) away from the elixir of immortality. Bhasmasura: To save Lord Shiva by tricking the demon Bhasmasura into destroying himself through dance.

The Classical dance form seeks to recreate the ethereal beauty and charm of this divine feminine avatar, making it an inherently female-led tradition so Mohiniyattam is called the ‘dance of the Enchantress’’.

 Lasya vs. Tandava: The Significance of Feminine Grace in Mohiniyattam

In the Natya Shastra an ancient manual of performance arts, Mohiniyattam is divided into two main categories such as

  • Tandava: The vigorous, masculine dance of Lord Shiva, representing power and destruction.

  • Lasya: The graceful, delicate dance of Goddess Parvati, representing love and beauty.

Mohiniyattam is the purest manifestation of the Lasya style. It avoids abrupt jerks and focuses on Sukumara (delicate) movements and Mukhabhinaya (subtle facial expressions), which have historically been viewed as the domain of female artists.

The Iconic Attire: Why Mohiniyattam Dancers Wear White and Gold

The costume of Mohiniyattam is a symbol of simplicity and purity. The specific aesthetic of the Iconic Attire enhances the "moon-like" radiance of the dancer which emphasises the fluid grace of the movements. The attire includes:

  • Kasavu Saree: Dancers wear an off-white or ivory cream saree.

  • The Gold Border: A bright gold-laced brocade known as Kasavu adorns the edges.

  • The Hair: Traditionally tied in a side bun (Kuduma) and decorated with jasmine flowers (Mulla).
